Author Muscle tension and lupus?

Does anyone have a problem with muscles being extremely tense and tight
without you even being aware of it? I recently had an aromatherapy treatment
and was told that all my muscles except those in the soles of my feet were
locked up with tension, but I wasn't aware of being tense! The tense muscles
hurt when pressed.
Anyone else have this, anyone have any pointers to documentation on it?

Oh, yeah all the time! Right now it's my shoulders and upper back with
tightness. Also I've been having Charlie horse-type cramping in my legs
which tells me the legs are very tight. I upped my B vits with the hopes
that it will help. If I complain to the doctor they want to give muscle
relaxants and I don't want them. Massage therapy helps.

Yes, I have had this, too. the rheumie I had at that time said that the
muscles were so tight that they were pulling the joints out of alignment.
His answer was for me to take lots of tranquilizers and sleep medications.
He got me addicted to high doses of medications, and I fired him. It has
taken me years to get those medications reduced, and yes, I still suffer
from very tense muscles. I am only really aware of the tension in my
shoulders and neck... they just feel like rocks.

But I could not function on all that medication that doctor was giving me,
so sometimes it is that we need to choose the lesser of two evils.

the best to you

My neck muscles get tight just reading these messages.
Those Charlie horses are sure painful.
I used to get them when yawning (chin area) or stretching my legs in bed. Don't
get 'em anymore.
I quit yawning and don't stretch in bed <g>
Hope it gets better.

I have it alot, and then on top of it comes the fibrositis too.

Now a friend of mine with lupus, uses message to help her. She is lucky
she has a sister who does it for "free" hehe But there is a product she
uses to that helps her a lot. I just ordered me one.
It is called Thera cane and it is suppose to help with messaging those
"knots" or tender points. SHe also mentioned it hurt like "H" when you do
it but later it feels much better. SO........if you hear a scream LOUDLY
in a week, you will know it came from OHIO.

I get really bad tense muscles in my upper back, and neck. From DDD and
fusion of the cervical spine. Arthritic spondlyosis it is called. I mean
Tens sometimes doesn't help or hot tub, or heat. I found ICE does the
best for me and trying to stretch. I have used skelaxin and darvocet for
pain too but try my best to stay away from that IF I can.
so I will try this new cane coming in the mail. It can be bought on ebay
and I found a cheapo site for it, other wise it runs 38.00 plus tax and
shipping. I got mine for 27.00 free shipping. Same cane different
company.
I am not PROMOTING THIS> It is something she uses and it works for her, so
I will give it a whirl. I am only out
MONEY....wahaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaa if it doesn't work.

hugs to all

Yes. I have fibro also. Not sure what is lupus and what is fibro when it
comes to the muscles. I never realized how tight I was all the time, until
a physical therapist told me. I just lived with it for so long.
In fact, my shoulders/neck are so knotted, if I drink alcohol, it physically
hurts me as my muscles start to unknot.
I take Flexeril as a muscle relaxer and it's the one that's worked the best
so far for me.

Yes Janers, there is a chart for the tender points, I have seen it in the
doctor's office. they are the points where you just touch the skin and it
feels like you are being pierced to the bone wiht a needle! I have all the
ones in my legs and hips, and quite a few of the upper body points as well.

My cat also seems aware of my tender point, because he finds them so easily!
None of the antidepressants has helped me with the fibro... in fact I have
found *nothing* at all that helps with fibro....

I also have some of the points but have never had the dx of fibromyalgia or
fibrositis put on me.... just systemic lupus with arthritis and soft tissue
inflammation around the joints and muscles...
and Mair I believe you are right cause even strong pain killers don't touch
that 'feeling'....
even my 2 cats know where not to step now LOL!! they don't like my reaction
when they do otherwise <g>.

I have had problems with my muscles with Lupus for so long and at
times it has been crippling.I cannot do anything for a prolonged
period and conversely I cannot sit or lay around for long either!!
I have all the tender points and i also get lumps in my
muscles. Last year I spent 3 weeks in a hospital that specialises in
Arthritis and Rhuematic conditions. It is in a volcanic thermal area
and uses the hot mineral water as part of the treatments. most
everyone wnt into the hot thermal pools which were up to 39 degrees C
but it was not on my program(I was the only one there at the time with
Lupus, most having RA). I asked to give it a try and soon discovered
why it wasn't part of my program as after 2 8 minute soaks my muscles
were in agony and I was so weak i could hardly walk. I also began to
bruise in small spots all over. However the oil massages , Hot mud
packs,(Thermal mud in a pack and wrapped in towels and appplied to
your worst sore spots) Acpuncture which I hadn't tried before but
worked wonders together with an all over exercise regime and water
exercise worked wonders for me. Trouble is I have slipped back and
could do with this every year. The Physio who was from the UK
"massaged "out my sore lumps rather vigorously which I had thought was
a no-no but also worked well. I had another therapist who had Fibro
herself and she gave me a relaxation tape which worked on relaxing
muscles in groups from head to foot and it works wonders too. Because
I have a stomach condition and malabsorption I take extra magnesium
too and (for me) this cuts my need for painkillers quite a bit. All in
all using a bit of everything has worked well for me as I was quite
crippled by the problems with the muscles (antidepressants also did
nothing for me except knock me out in even the smallest doses!!)A
doctor I met who had very bad lupus himself told me the one thing he
would recommend was keeping an open mind and be prepared to give
things ago and I can honestly say this has helped me the most.Bring on
the acupuncture needles!!!!!!!!!

before lupus, hot baths would relax me. Now.... oh my gosh! Have had a bad
bout with hip and back pain for a couple weeks. Taking hot baths seems to
amplify pain after 15 minutes and like you said about the weakness... I have
to be very careful getting up and out of tub.

Can anyone explain the physiology of why this happens?
