| have you all heard about diet sodas being a trigger for lupus flares?
I am a big diet soda drinker and I wonder if that's got something to
do with my flares being worse each time

Hi susana, we've discussed it before (aspartame).
Even if you stopped drinking it, there would be no sure way to know,
because flares come and go.
But if it would make you feel better (or you want to "diary" it over a
longer term), don't drink it.

| The good news it they have replaced the Nutrasweet now with Splenda in the
diet sodas. So who knows?? Trading evils???

| Hi Susana,
Speaking as a girl once addicted to diet coke, I did notice some physical
symptoms with drinking it -- headaches mainly and an overall crummy feeling.
Since all this autoimmune stuff started a couple years ago I think I am much
more sensitive to it and only have it once in awhile. Fake sugars mess with
me now. Don't know that scientific reasoning behind it all - but I think you
may be onto something. Who knows? I still have it occasionally and 75% of
the time bear the consequences. (I am a SLOW learner)

| Any chemical that one might be sensitive to has the potential to trigger
symptoms.
But please do not "buy into" the scare tactics that these chemicals *cause*
lupus. There is no scientific evidence for this whatsoever.
In general, I think some of the crud we dump into our environment and our
foods has some part in illnesses of all sorts. But my approach to all such
things is one I think is rather sound -
all things in moderation.
that said - hubby is very healthy - the guy can stand outside in Houston
August weather for 4 hours cutting the lawn, clipping branches and weeding
flower beds. 10 minutes and I'm toast. :P or perhaps more like steamed
cabbage. He drinks about 2 liters of diet soda a day (sometimes more) - I
drink none.
go figure.
for some reason I can't get to www.lupus.org but they have a statement re:
the claims about Aspartame causing all sorts of chronic ills that I would
recommend everyone read when they can.

Thanks! I'll try to do a bit more reseach on the threads posted before
asking a question. I guess sometimes I just get lazy... sorry about
that.
In the meantime I'll just stay away from diet drinks

I agree with your assessment. My favorite drink is water. 'Course in my
area most tap water is good! I'm just not interested in living on sodas and
they all can cause other problems as well as not quenching thirst as well.
I also can't get to www.lupus.org this morning. They must be having server
problems.

Hi Susana,
No need to apologize. I should
I started the post, then was going to go looking in the Google archives to see what
had been said before (then continue after "we've discussed it before"), but "brain
fog" hit me.
After I posted I saw that I'd left a "dangling thought" <grin> but my arm was
hurting so I decided to wait and see if others (incl. KC comments) and she did. No
worries. Once my arm is better, I should be back to speed.
Keep in touch and let us know how you're doing, Ok?
Hugs to you,
J

This is the "aspartame causes lupus" story. Some people believe it, some
do not.

| Hi,
I always read the label before buying drinks. If they have anything
artificial in them, I put them straight back on the shelf. It is actually
quite hard to find dilutable drinks that don't have artificial ingredients
in. Even some that look as if they would be good for you have chemicals in.
Some have the word "spring" on them so they sound natural, but thy contain
chemical additives!
The natural food stores and the larger supermarkets have a few without
chemical additives. I find I now prefer pure fruit juices diluted with about
1 part water to 1 part juice. Or filtered water!

NB: filtered water is cheap, and we've just bought a BRITA carbon-filter
jug ourselves. But note that filtered water doesn't keep well: ours says
"use within 1-2 days" - this is because you are filtering out the
chlorine or whatever. It also warns that if you have kidney disease or
are on dialysis you should consult their help line and your own doctor,
since the filtering can increase the potassium content. [It also adds "a
small amount of silver which poses no known risk to health".]

| When i drink OJ, fresh squeezed by the litre, i always dilute 1-1 with h2o.
Because i drink a lot of filtered h2o daily (at least 4 litres all totalled)
i find that any other juice or drink is just too 'flavorful' for my taste.
Mostly i just stick to the water as we are what? 90% water in our make up
anyhow? something like that.... someone out there can correct me if need be
<g> and personally i feel like crap when i get dehydrated even a little bit!

| I must dilute OJ and several other juices as the acid is just too much on my
tummy. Yep, same tummy that can handle a whole load of aspirin can't handle
OJ. Go figure!
Oh, darn, I knew the answer to this but it has something to do - that is the
same as MS. Nerve endings dehydrate first and therefore cause more problems.
I can't remember exactly. I have a real problem with it but I wouldn't say I
drink a whole lot just that I drink constantly. Just a wee bit all the time.
It's also what drove me out of the garden - not the sun on my skin as much
as the dehydration of the body in the heat.
