Plastic toys in mouth harmful?
|
|
| Kedar Agarkar 2004-10-03, 10:16 pm |
| Hello together,
Can plastic toys prove to be harmful to kids, in terms of their
chemical composition. Kids at times put the soft colored plastic toys
into mouths and go on chewing for a long time.
Is it that a color or otherwise simillar content of plastic may get
desolved and cause harm if swallowed? Because, I have heard that
processes such as microwaving in plastic containers could releases
cancer causing elements from plastic.
Can somebody throw the lights?
Thanks for your time.

| Lots of toys used to be made from PVC (polyvinylchloride, "vinyl").
PVC is cheap but it is a lousy plastic - very brittle unless oily
substances are added to it in huge amounts to make is soft. The used
plasticizers (phtalates) are considered benign. Softened PVC is almost
everywhere - for example floor plastic cover and most of water pipes
are made from PVC. But since soft vinyl toys contain something like
30% of phtalates by weight and kids are so sensitive, this kind of
plastic is not the best thing to make toys from for chewing. I believe
there is some regulation about use of phtalate-plasticized materials
in toys, at least in Europe.

| Don't worry. Toys that are made to be "mouthed" by infants and toddlers are
made to be safe. Stay away from cheap toys and you shouldn't have anything
to worry about.
Unless your kids' mouth gets as hot as a microwave, no worries there either.
But I can't emphasize enough to stay away from those dime store "Asian"
imports.

Um, yeah.
Birth defects, reproductive damage in males is no problem, etc.
You can read about _Phthalates_ at www.notsopretty.com
It's enough to make me toss out my big bottle of Christian Dior Poison,
my hairsprays, gels or deodorants containing them.
There are about 6 main types of phthalates.

Anyone care to correlate the use of oestrogenic type chemicals like phthalates
to the apparent increase in homosexuality in developed nations?
Or are we into non-PC research here?

Kids like to put their toys into every imaginable orifice. By the time
when they start attending 'Pride' parades, the phtalate damage has
been already done.

I suspect the danger from choking is approximately 1,000,000,000 times
greater than the danger from plasticizers

In terms of outright deaths, maybe.
How about damage to sperm count or sexual development?

Choking to death has profound effects on sperm count and sexual
development............

The damage would take place in utero, I'd think.
As I recall there is evidence some lesbians have had
excess androgen exposure. So I think it possible
phthalates and even plant estrogens may have
a role in male homosexuality.

Revenge of the soya.
All those NewAge veggies are breeding gays...
There's a strange kind of logic...
