Probably not going to tell you or Wanderer anything you don't know
already but just for those who might be watching...

Went to the PCP for my first shot today and wouldn't you know it, he's
home sick with "a virus". His partner, a young Syrian with an
unpronounceable name and a mediocre command of English, was filling in
and taking the PCP's customers. Well, I'm not the best of patients to
meet--I suppose I'm a little intimidating. Every time I go to the MD I
take a card with a list of talking points and I suppose I tend to
dominate the conversation. My PCP knows this, understands and just
ignores me when I start lecturing. He makes comments like, "Have you
taken your Urology Boards yet?"

Anyway this Syrian guy seemed sort of shell shocked as I reeled off a
list of prescriptions I wanted him to write (he did), and then told
him to take some blood and be careful because DHT required a special
vial. He looked them all up...I had to tell him what SHBG is. When
that was all over I told him I wanted him to inject 0.6ml into the
gluteal muscle, show me (or explain to me so the wife can do it), and
then give me a half-dozen syringes and needles. I'd previously agreed
all this with my PCP but he wrote 2cc each month on the label so the
Syrian balked but eventually put 1.4ml back in the bottle. He didn't
like the idea of me injecting myself at all and refused to give me the
syringes. He says I can contact my regular PCP next week when he'll be
back. Of course the Syrian doesn't know about the wonders of the
internet and as soon as I arrived home I put in an order with your
(Muerta's) FL supplier for exactly what you use.

The Syrian gave me the shot while I was standing. No explanation but
later research disclosed that it's best to give in this position with
the toes pointed inwards. In this position you can't tense the gluteal
muscle and it hurts less. In fact it didn't hurt at all; inserting the
device in the vein to take the blood hurt more. The syringe should be
inserted parallel to the floor and to the limit of its length (1.5in).

I believe the Syrian used a 23ga and he said 16ga to withdraw the
stuff from the bottle.

I currently have a tiny bruise-type pain like I bumped into something.
[vbcol=seagreen]

I can't say I feel anything, yet. I was rather looking forward to
raping a few of the grandma's in the 'hood <g>.
[vbcol=seagreen]

Whoa, this is an ultra-important point. You take your butt cheek
(right or left) and mentally divide it into quarters. You inject only
in the upper outer corner. I'm still researching the "Iliac Crest".

The Syrian said you can hit bone but didn't say what the consequences
would be.

> The needle goes all the way in. If not, the worse

According to the Syrian you press and massage the injection site to
prevent this happening.
[vbcol=seagreen]

Eeee, no. According to the bodybuilder sites and an English nursing
site the biggest danger is hitting the sciatic nerve which passes
across each butt in a diagonal direction just to the inside (nearest
the butt crack) of the imaginary midpoint of your quadrant dividing
talked about above. Hitting this nerve can result in anything from
momentary pain to permanent paralysis of the leg between the knee and
the foot. Theoretically it's possible to hit a main artery but
unlikely since they're very deep.

According to my on-going research the biggest problem in general with
IM injections (by professionals) is not penetrating into the muscle
due to too much fat. The result is that the drug is immediately
absorbed from the fat instead of over a longer period. Not too much of
a problem for us but it crossed my mind that Depo-Provera may be
injected like this. What happens to contraception if that happens? If
anything I'm skinny so perhaps that's why the Syrian said that I might
hit a bone. Maybe it doesn't apply to the more butt-muscled among us.
