Cialis -- Long term side effects

| September 2004 I started taking first Liquid Cialis and then from
about Mid-2005 20mg Josh's tablet each day for about 5 days each week.
For the first couple of weeks I had some pain in my buttocks/thighs
but that went away and Cialis had its appropriate effect. Then in
about May 2006 I started to get lots of indigestion and a pain around
the ribcage as though all the inside of my chest was sore.
I'd had periods of indigestion (heartburn) before back in the eighties
to early nineties but that was almost certainly due to excessive
alcohol intake. It was controllable with baking soda or the big guns,
Tums. I even bought some generic rantadine but only ever had to use it
once or twice. The real solution was to cut down on the alcohol which
I did limiting myself to the occasional bottle of wine with the wife
and a pre-dinner sherry each night. But this new bout wasn't
controllable with any of the low-level stuff. Even rantadine wasn't
working too well. I cut out the sherry. Little improvement. I was
considering heading off to the PCP for some prescription grade
heartburn relief.
As to the chest pain, I suffer from mild COPD and one of the
characteristics of COPD is that the lungs grow (actually increase in
size) to compensate for the damaged alveoli. I hypothesized that the
lungs were pushing against the chest wall and causing inflammation
even though the medical texts don't say that this happens and it's
more in the front than the back where the lungs are.
Well, coincidentally I was running out of Cialis and seeing that Josh
has put up his price I thought I might go back to Viaga. I bought
Manly from All Day Chemist (still waiting for 1 of three packages
which seems to have been lost or seized but they're sending another)
and started with that instead of Cialis. Wow! Two weeks later and I
haven't had a single incident of heartburn nor chest pain.
Anecdotal, yes; sample size of one, yes; but my hypothesis is that in
addition to being a PDE-5 suppressor Cialis also effects negatively
other aspects of bodily functions. For example, I believe that there's
a sphincter involved in preventing back up of stomach acid into the
esophagus. If Cialis weakens that sphincter or prevents it closing
(similar to what Flomax does to the bladder neck) then it would cause
the symptoms of GERD. Long duration at high dose, hmm, sounds like
Vioxxx. Hopefully I haven't caused any permanent damage.

| Viagra can also cause substantial indigestion. I use generic Aciphex
from AllDay to offset it.

Not to raise old issues, but using bootleg drugs may not be the best way to
test the side effects of Cialis. I am a long-term user of it, with no
long-term side effects. I get major side effects from Ceebis, including a
racing heart rate and raging indigestion. Having said that, I also believe
that it's a good thing to switch off to Viagra or Levitra now and then. Like
many of us in here, I have used the "generics" more than a few times... but
I'm increasingly wary of them.

I am as well. There are too many unknowns.

Mungy, you have been in this group for a long time, but you must not
have been out bonking instead of reading a few years ago when this
problem was first discussed.
There are variety opinions on this, but I feel that if you have muscle
pains and heartburn with Cialis (and I've always used Josh's IP brand),
you are simply taking too much.
I first took a 20mg tablet, when I first got the medicine, 'cause I did
not wish to wait while I looked for my misplaced pill cutter. Not much
erectile benefit and some heartburn. If you take a 20mg pill daily for
5 days, it builds up in your body and by the 5th day you have (20 x 1.6
=) the equivalent of a 32 mg dose in you. (Source: Cialis approval tests
at FDA.gov)
Like an idiot, I increased my dose when the first pill did not work as
well as expected and I know that a lot of others did the same.
I later discovered that 10mg works better than 20 or 40 mg, no
heartburn, if taken at least 5 hours prior to bedtime. If taken daily,
only use 5mg or 1/4 tablet. If taken daily, the medicine quits working
in about two weeks, a time which will vary considerably with each
individual. The only disadvantage of the 5mg dosage is the working
window is much less -- for me about 10 or 12 hours.

I read the comments at the time (I thought there was something recent
about heartburn too) but for a long time not only did 20mg work well
but after the first few weeks there weren't any side effects. Only in
the last four or so months have these come into play and they weren't
the same as those of the first few weeks.

I don't understand this. Are you saying that 5mg will quit working
after two weeks? What do you do then?
Currently I'm pretty happy with my Manly (50mg). I think it actually
gives me a bigger and harder erection and I don't find the timing to
be a problem.

Yes, if I take Cialis daily for about two weeks, it simply stops
working. I have to quit for a few days and the restart. For me, it has
to be cycled. I simply alternate medicines regularly and this is an
annoyance, but not a problem.
