WASHINGTON, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- U.K. doctors Thursday reported a case of
a woman who developed cataracts and glaucoma from medication she
purchased over the Internet, raising new concerns about the dangers of
buying drugs online.
The physicians describe the case of a 64-year-old woman who diagnosed
herself with chronic fatigue syndrome and had been taking prednisolone
purchased over the Internet for four years. The woman bought the drugs
from an online company based in Thailand.

It seems the availability is the problem.

I think anyone buying drugs online should certainly be aware that there may
be risks, and should do as much due diligence as possible to make sure you
are dealing with a "reputable" company -- at least one that has earned the
trust of its customers. However, what many people are NOT aware of is the
fact that drugs bought from your local pharmacy stand a good chance of being
counterfeit as well. Recent reports on news programs have clearly documented
the fact that counterfeit drugs have entered the US distribution system, and
are not detected by pharmacists or regulators. So I'm not sure how much
better off you are buying from Rite-Aid.

I can confirm this. When I first started using Viagra I filled a 12
pill prescription at a local Big-Box pharmacy. Zilch, nada results.
Meanwhile several of us split a bulk shipment of imitations from India
-- worked fine.
Complained to the Big-Box. They said to talk to my doctor. He gave me
a pre-printed mailing envelop and a new prescription. Mailed the bad
pills and the new scrip. Got replacement pills.
Several years ago the Brits ran an excellent study on imitations and
counterfeits in the world market. The bottom line was that the better
imitations were the most dependable. (Few of the imitations get
counterfeited.) The only way to "counter" this problem is with an
active confiscation program by customs.
As Wanderer indicates, it's a bit of a crap shoot and source is
everything. ...Lmac
