Not sure what's going on really. Never can remember a time that I could
gain a full erection, and I certainly can't now. I can get to maybe 70%
and I can make it stand up a bit if I contract the muscle, but that
lasts for all of a second. Even when it gets to 70%, it doesn't last
long at all, which lead me to believe it might be venous leak. So I
tried a constrictor ring, but then realized that there's just not
enough blood there to trap, and even the trapping itself didn't seem
like it was doing the best job with what was there.

I wake up with a semi-erection most every morning and I used the little
take home test which confirmed that I get about 4 erections a night,
but I'm willing to bet none of them are ever full-on. I'm reasonably
healthy, don't have diabetes or anything. In my past, I've had what
seems to have been poor blood flow - when I was younger, if I ran too
much, my extremities would become tingly, and if I got up too fast, I
would very often become very dizzy and have what seemed to be pretty
severe head rushes. Just today I gave blood and the nurse noted that it
seemed to take a somewhat unusual amount of time for me to fill the
bag. Perhaps none of this is notable, but I'm trying to take everything
into consideration.

>From what I've read here, venous leak at my age seems highly unlikely,

and the fact that I can't really even get completely hard suggests
there's more to it. I've never had any trauma that I can remember,
either physical or emotional, that would contribute to it. Tried
Viagra, and while it certainly stimulates circulation, still not
getting much further past 70% or so, though it seems somewhat more
persistant.

I guess I'm just wondering what might be wrong.

I think you are worrying about it, and it becomes a self fulfilling
prophecy. However, I know it's tough, talk to your doctor, and ask to
see a good urologist. If you're embarrassed about your folks knowing,
just say something like you've had some burning. It could also be a
sign of other issues.

I'd still bet it's a self fulfilling prophecy, and you'll get over it.

A number of people your age drink a lot of cola drinks. Coffee and coke have
a lot of caffeine in it. And caffeine is an erection killer. Read my weakly
posts for other ideas about what your cause might be. It could be something
simple. If you do have a problem, there are a number of medicines. Just don't
give up hope.

I do drink a lot of soda...in fact, wayyy more than I should. I'd say
about 4-5 a day, and usually a cup or two of coffee. But that seems odd
that that would be it, because aren't there plenty of people who drink
caffeine like crazy anyway? I'll give it a try though, but I I have a
feeling it won't change much.

As for the self-fulfilling prophecy...maybe. But I'm not entirely sure
how that would work. Of course I want to have a normal life, and I'm
not very upset about it or anything, which may sound hard to believe
but I'm trying to take a rational approach to the situation and so far
its working.

I've already gone to the uro and my parents know all about it. I didn't
think being embarrassed about it would help all that much so I just
decided to handle it. I don't remember all of what was said with the
uro, but after the test thing he gave me where it measured my nocturnal
erections (which I seem to have normal activity, but again, I doubt any
of them are full on erections) and after I told him I was healthy
otherwise, I think he suggested it might be venous leak. But like I
said, I don't even get enough blood down there to even get much of an
erection to lose.

Right. And they sell a lot of Viagra now, too. Vasoconstriction
(constriction of the blood vessels - opposite of what happens in you dick
during erections) comes from heavy exercise (causing adrenalin), nicotine
from smoking; caffeine from coffee, coke and chocolate; and many cold
medicines. Put the odds in your favor. I stop coffee drinking at noon
because caffeine has a rather long half-life. Vasodilating (dilating the
blood vessels) from injection therapy, or taking Viagra or Cialis (which
helps stop normal vasoconstriction) helps counteract.

It's worth a try.

It's obvious that this dominates your thoughts. No one had a lasting
erection while worried about it.

Clearly, you need to see a top urologist. We don't know where you live
to help you with advice.

Of course a healthy life is really important. Please, please, please,
not only for this but the rest of your life, give up smoking 100% now.
This is the time to stop. The addiction will get worse and worse. It is
the leading cause of preventable deaths, and it reduces the quality of
your life. It is more addicting than heroine. It will cost enough to
buy a home. A little smoking will lead to more. Any smoking will
increase the cost of insurance. Now is the time to stop.

The fact that your doctor wants to do surgery without a complete blood
working is insane.

What are your testosterone levels. Including your free testosterone
level. If those a low it will not only cause you problems, but will
lead to early onset of osteoperosis.

I'd strongly consider seeing an endocrinologist to analyze your blood.
Better to rule it out. If the levels are low get a scan to get your
bone density baseline.

Incidentally, LOTS of 17 year olds have performance anxiety. They just
don't talk about it.

"I wake up with a semi-erection most every morning"

Hi there

Sorry to hear of your problems. All guys should awaken at some stage
with a full erection / boner as this is an indication that, interalia
the autonomic nervous system is intact. If that is not the case the
impotence is probably on the basis of an anatomical abnormality (eg
poor blood flow etc as you mention). If psychology was the issue (eg
stress, performance anxiety) then the morning glory we all talk of
would still occur normally. I would think that if you were circumcised
(as Moishe appears to allude in postings may be your problem) you would
still awaken with the proverbial boner: I'm circumcised myself from
birth and at age 29 I can attest to this. I have been doing reading
into the matter as I've noticed the numerous suggestions that
circumcision leads to inpotence. That in mind none of my family or
friends (all circ'd) admit to the problem. I'd be interested whether
there is a family history of peripheral vascular disease ("when I was
younger, if I ran too much, my extremities would become tingly, and if
I got up too fast, I would very often become very dizzy") or
hypercholesterolaemia. It sounds like you may have postural hypotension
or some kind of peripheral neuropathy from what you describe. I'm not
convinced from the above info that anyone in their right mind could say
your 'problem' is on the basis of circumcision (if infact you are
circ'd).My suggestion would be to see a sexologist. Keep us posted on
your progress. And best of luck.

sure your intentions are good but a little inappropriate (and
premature)don't you think.

I am not circumsized. Cholestoral levels are low according to the
analysis by the blood donor people, blood pressure is also normal. I
only occasionally have dizziness when I stand these days, though
postural hypotension is certainly what I would have called it when I
was around 10 or 11 and I'd fall down and forget where I was.
Peripheral neuropathy is also a possiblity, but that too seems to have
diminished over the years and I can't remember the last time my hands
felt tingly when running, and it doesnt happen when I'm at rest.

Thank you everyone for your help. Its greatly appreciated, more than
you know.

I hope you see a good urologist. This could be a symptom of other
problems. The other symptoms are concerning.

I suspect running would be helpful for everything. Fitness and diet are
essential, regardless of what is going on.

Certainly stress is an issue, performance anxiety is a self fulfilling
prophesy.

Better not let Paul hear you with that word. Next thing the idiot will
