Blood pressure pills cause impotence issues

| I have to take blood pressure pills. Recently the doctor put me on very
strong pills. Now I find it hard to come. Could this be the cause?
I can come but I really have to work at it. So with my partner, I don't
come. It seems to be bottled up inside but if I masturbate I can.

| Can you tell us what you were taking before, and what the new medicine
is? Something more than just "pills".

Some people tweak cars. Some people tweak computers. Here we are, and we
tweak ED drugs.
I saw the original article a year or two ago. Three anti-hypertensives
(alpha-blockers), by themselves with no EDs, resulted in more erections
in hypertensive men. The only one I remember was Doxazosin. Cuz I got a
script for it, just for that reason. Shhh... Google the rest.
You'll find warnings about mixing anti-hypertensives with ED drugs. The
drop in blood pressure they're worried about turns out to be only 7mmHg
lower on both your systolic & diastolic numbers. Duh. If you ARE
concerned, wait 4 hours after taking your BP pill before taking an ED.
Longer/Faster/Louder (And I an't talking about music)
Cimetidine (800 mg) aka Tagamet, caused a 56% increase in plasma
concentrations of the ED when coadministered with it.
Erythromycin (now a generic antibiotic) at steady state (500 mg bid for
5 days; but hey, you're suppose to take it for 10 days anyway), there
was a 182% increase in systemic ED exposure.
I am very healthy. I have a resting pulse of +/- 60, normal BP, work out
4 times a week. I can burn a 1000 calories in 37 minutes. When I'm not
being stupid, I do it in 40 minutes, but then I swim a 1/4 to 1/2 mile.
But I tweak, there I am. Even with a 4mg Doxazosin, MY heart pounds, so
I only take half with 20mg Cialis, plus a Tagamet 1/2 hour ahead of
time. I try to shag one of my kids old scripts for an erythroycin if I
want her to be bow-legged with a sore throat in the morning.

I tried to stop taking my BP pills for two days. It almost worked but I
did not quite make it. I felt so bad.

Candesartan doesn't have a reputation for causing this
problem. HCTZ has a reputation for erectile dysfunction,
but not really delayed orgasm.
However, since this problem apparently started soon after
beginning this medication, it's possible that it does affect
you that way.
Why don't you talk to your doctor, tell him about the
problem, and ask him to put you on something else for a few
weeks to see if it makes any difference.

Ran into this problem myself, Bernie. Changed my accupril script to Avapro.
An AT2 antagonist (most prefer cozaar) is actually pro-sexual, and excellent
for th kidneys. When BP rose, added a small dose of cardizem, which also did
not increase the ED.
Thiazide diuretics are limp dick meds. No way around it. If I couldn't get
BP down any other way, I'm sure I'd do it. However, the Avapro and Cardizem,
and a little weight loss has worked out great, and with Cialis, it has been
like I'm 18 again. Oh, yeah, and 120mg of T-cyp a week ;)

Yeah, I've been taking diltiazem (Cardizem) myself for
several years at a pretty high dose, with no adverse affects
so far.

Do you think a low dose of hydrochlorothiazide, like 12.5 mg
per day, would have such effects? I'm thinking of trying a
combination of that and enalapril (ACE inhibitor).
Unfortunately, the Cozaar class has no effect on my BP.

That's too bad, Peabody. Did you try any of the other AT2 killers like
Avapro, et al?
I would say, "try it". Everybody reacts differently, you know, and you may
maintain it well. Thiazides and Beta Blockers have always been at the top of
the ED list, so I have established with the doc that discussion of them is
verboten.
On the subject of BP (sooooo, were not OT here), I was rising a while back,
got *really* frustrated, as the wife was climbing too. Thought about giving
up drinking and smoking, but that's far too radical ;)
So, we walked out of the docs office in FEB, and said, "Absolutely no fast
foods or high sodium foods". Went to it, chenged the way we ate, which was
only tough for about 3 days, and cut down on portions (Man, I love my 24 oz
steaks).
After 3 months, we're down 25 lbs each, my BP is down 15 points, my wife's
almost 25.
Still maintaining on Chicken breasts cooked in olive oil, lean red meat,
dark green veggies, salad, whole grain bread, fruits, etc. Still losing
weight. I'm only 5' 7" and when I started this I weighed 216, I am now just
under 190. I shall add excersize soon.
Remember, mi amigo, ED don't kill ya, HBP does.
Shall be out of town a week if any replies are needed.
