Hi, I am going to start this one step at a time and slowly, I am a 41 yr
old male with absolutely no sex drive (and impodent) but I'll deal with
that later. I would like to start with some sort of T-replacement
therapy, is this something I have to see a doctor for or is there some
place I could just buy some testosterone program? I would like to start
with this first and then add some viagra after I start feeling some sort
of sex drive, then we will see what happens. I am single and its very
hard to start dating someone if you have no sex drive and cant get it
up. I know your all going to start to tell me to see a doctor but I
would like to start this way first. I haven't had morning erections in
probably about 3 years now, and when I used to get erections years ago
they were very sort and didn't last long at all. I got real desperate a
few years ago and visited this doctor who treats things like this and it
was a nightmare! he didn't seem to care or believe me to much and gave
me some viagra and that was it. The viagra didn't work at all but
probably cause I had no sex drive. And now I met this really nice girl
but I havn't asked her out at all cause of all my problems and I'll
probably lose her If I dont do something soon, and I know she likes me.
Thanks

IM, with the limited info you provided, we can make some suggestions to you
from experience.

Libido...or the absence of it. Someone in this group, years ago, said,
"there's nothing better for libido than and erection" (I paraphrase).

Is there a total lack of libido on your part? Does *anything* arouse you?
Can you masturbate normally? If not, we move to the second part.

Hormones....

You have a concern with seeing a Dr. Believe me, brother you're preaching to
the choir here. We have all had that concern. We have all been shut down by
a Dr., and we have all *changed* Drs. The medical community has thousands
and thousands of afflictions to deal with, legal challenges, the fear of
"stepping outside of the box", and concerns about treatments.

We, however, have one single affliction/concern tha we are here for. ED.

Bottom line is, bud, you are going to have to get tested. There is no magic
bullet or cure. Yes, it sounds like you have a problem. However, understand
it can be caused by a hundred things, including, but not limited to:
High blood pressure
Medications
Depression
Nerve damage
Circulatory impairment
An ugly wife or girlfriend (OK, this ones not *real* common, but happens) ;)

Most of us that have been around here for awhile are pretty much convinced
that no matter what it is, it can be cured. This ranges from simple hormone
balancing, through viagra/cialis/levitra, to the most aggressive and sure
approach (other than implant) which is trimix injections.

I assure you that we have been through what you're going through, at around
the same age give or take, and we have been "through the mill" with drs and
treatments. However, we have all found an answer, and what works for one
isn't the answer for many others.

To approach this, most important, you're going to have to start with a
physical exam, blood pressure, routine stuff, and get blood tests for
*minimum*, the following:

Testosterone serum
Free and weekly bound testosterone (FWBT)
Estradiol (E2)
Prolactin

If you are dead-XXX set against finding a Dr. that will run those, you can
get them through a saliva test on your own with a mail-in kit from ZRT labs.
It is accurate and private. Google ZRT labs for info. Gotta have some
numbers before we can go much farther.

In reading your post, I see two things that I'd like to call your attention
to:

"I know your all going to start to tell me to see a doctor but I
would like to start this way first."

In my business, we have a saying, "he who defends himself in a court of law
has a fool for a client". that actually applys in medicine a lot also. You
absolutely, positively must know the cause of the problem before you can
cure it. Throwing treatments at ED can do you a lot more harm than good.
Maybe your T is low, and maybe it isn't. Maybe that's the problem (easily
cured) maybe it isn't.

"And now I met this really nice girl
but I havn't asked her out at all cause of all my problems and I'll
probably lose her If I dont do something soon, and I know she likes me"

We've all been there, done that. Be candid and honest without confessing.
Developing a mental relationship prior to a sexual one is more rewarding
than the other way around. Just tell her that you are going through
"andropause", because that's what it probably is, and you're in the process
of treating it. Women understand that because they live in fear of
menopause. Man, it's a natural thing, and we can beat it now.

When you take a couple of steps, and want to bounce some ideas, rant, plead,
or query, post here. we have some of the best, non-judgemental, experienced
guys here. There are both straight and gay here, and women have been known
to drop in from time to time.

Also check out Jerry's weekly posting, and the sister group for ASI on
Yahoo.

Wish you luck. You're not alone. We're always here.

It's not that simple. But it is true that if blood is flowing to the penis
normally it's probably also flowing to the brain as well.

It can be many things but the main thing is aging and the receptors in the
area of the brain that are stimulated by sex or the thought of sex. IMO the
nerve receptors in the brain become sensitized(addicted or physically
dependant) to the chemicals that cause you to become aroused, much the same
as they do to opiates. It takes more and more to get the same reaction till
eventually you get none. Why do you think that it's common for older men to
want young women? They need them to get stimulated lol

including, but not limited to:
> High blood pressure

Treat it but remember that the drugs will cause ED.

> Medications

Drugs for depression will also cause ED. Besides people with depression
actually get better faster than people who see psychiatrists and take drugs
for it!

> Nerve damage

;)

That's a big problem haha Even the most beautiful young girl in the world
becomes less attractive(you become sensitized) after a short while. Men were
not meant to be monogamous.

It's extremely rare for the problem to be testosterone. The normal lab
values for teenage boys is 1/2 that of adult men.

Don't take anything it's a waste. In fact you'll turn off your own
production of testosterone by taking it.

Don't do that. If you can't perform tell you had an accident and damaged
some nerves in your spine but that they will regenerate in a year or so.

When I was 40 I mentioned to my doctor that I had no sex drive. He
took some blood and found my testosterone level was 140-something
(where 300 to 1000 is normal). He started me on Androgel.

It didn't really help.

Further testing showed I had high prolactin caused by a pituitary
tumor. Other reading I've done has indicated that the prolactin needed
treating before the T was going to come into range.

Anyway, it took a year from my first visit to the doc before I had the
additional bloodwork done and found the cause of my problem. That was
a year I wasted trying other useless (in my case) things to boost my
T.

BTW, I was on Androgel for less than 2 months before I quit taking it.

My lack of sex drive came with impotence. I could periodically get it
up, but the erections were never good. I also went for a period of
time with no morning erections.

So, what I'm saying is what you suspected. Your really should see a
doctor and get additional bloodwork done before starting TRT.
Depending on the cause of your low libido TRT may not be the help you
hope it will be. I'm not trying to be discouraging -- but getting
bloodwork done now may be a time saver in the long run.

(FWIW, It sounds like you may need to find a new doctor.)

The bloodwork I requested, based on info collected here:
SHBG, FSH, Testosterone, Estradiol, Prolactin, TSH,
LH, Free T, Total Estrogens and DHEA

If you have the interest you can read the 3-year history of my problem
at http://tinyurl.com/4k6s4

.... not because it's particularly gripping or necessarily a
page-turner -- I just know that when I was trying to figure out what
was going on I read everything I could.

Oh, I've been taking medicine to treat high prolactin for more than 2
years. Only recently has my bloodwork come into the normal range. This
would certainly be discouraging news to someone recently discovering
they have low T caused by high prolactin. I recently read a story
about a guy who had prolactin far higher than mine -- his hormones
were within range (with medication) within a month or two.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I did some checking -- his prolactin was within range within a week.

[Again, not necessarily your problem, but I thought I should clear
this up.]
