Author Is Prolactin and E2 Test not necessary for young men with ED?

My doctor refused to prescribe a test for prolactin, and E2, arguing
that this is only valuable for old men, with Low T.
My Free T is above normal (3.1 ng/ml range 0.6 - 2.2 ng/ml).

Is he right?

I'm still waiting for my copy of Ken Baker's book, "Man Made: A Memoir
of My Body" to arrive. While Googling for info on the book I ran
across something that said his testosterone level was in the
low-normal range. His prolactin was 150 times higher than normal for
a man.

He was in his 20s

I clipped the following

*******************
I recently had Ken Baker, the author of "Man Made," on my radio show.
Until he was in his late 20s, Baker had an almost non-existent sex
drive and was unable to have an erection. But like so many men,
because of the stigma surrounding this issue, he convinced himself the
problem was all in his head, until a girlfriend forced him to get a
checkup.

A simple blood test revealed Baker had 150 times the normal level of
the hormone prolactin and was severely deficient in testosterone. The
cause was a tumor in his pituitary gland. When it was removed and he
was put on medication, the effect was dramatic. Almost immediately,
his sex drive went through the roof.
*******************

I had to do some talking to get my doctor to run additional tests on
me. As it turned out I had a high prolactin/low testosterone combo.

I was 40 when diagnosed. I had the problem a couple of years prior to
that, I'm sure. I don't think 38 is what your doc meant by old ... so,
no, he is not correct in saying testing for prolactin and E2 are
appropriate only for older men with low T.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

Paul,

I misread your bloodwork. I'm so used to seeing folks post low values
and am more used to values in the hundreds. I read the upper end as
22, and it wasn't until I read Greg's post that I caught my mistake.

Sorry about that.

Well, Paul, prolactin is useful in the male body as a "safeguard", as I
understand. The purpose is to inhibit an erection during "refractory time",
that is right after you climax, to give it a rest until the next time you
have sex. That can be anywhere from 30 minutes to (whatever). We get a surge
of it after orgasm.

However, as you've read from guys here, if it goes out of whack, ED is one
of it's side effects.

Many docs won't do the tests that we've found to be beneficial in diagnosis,
or to be able to "rule out" any potential problem.

Choices are, you can change docs, or look up a place called ZRT labs,

http://www.salivatest.com/

and get yourself a saliva test which will show bioavailable levels of
whatever you are seeking. You can get E2 there, I know, I've done it.

Thanks for your reply.

> Are you taking anything to lower estrogen levels?

No, I don't take any medication.
I tried for a month Yohimbine(prescribed by my Uro), but it's more
trouble then any thing else(anxiety, and sleep disorder). So, I
stopped taking it.
Cialis and livitra didn't work well.
Viagra worked for me but sometimes it fails.

I don't have neither acne nor oily skin.
As my ED is concerned, I can hardly achieve an erection without manual
stimulation, and if I get one, I can't maintain it long enough for
intercourse.
Also, my libido is low. Junior use to wake-up each time he sees a sexy
woman, but now he is always sleeping whatever how sexy is the woman.
Also, I don't have morning/night erection on a regular basis, if I get
them they are not very hard.

I've none of this, everything looks fine, I've been examined by my
Uro.

Do you see something that I should have checked?
