Study Details Mobile Phone Dangers
Long-term use increases the risk of developing tumors, new research
indicates.
Scarlet Pruitt, IDG News Service
Thursday, October 14, 2004
Ten or more years of mobile phone use can dramatically increase the
risk of developing a benign tumor on the auditory nerve, according to
a new study.
The study, conducted by the Institute of Environmental Medicine at
Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm found that the risk of developing
the tumors, known as acoustic neuromas, almost doubled for persons who
started using their mobile phone at least 10 years before diagnosis.
What's more, the risk increase was confined to the side of the head
where the phone was usually held, according to results of the study
released this week.
The study of around 150 acoustic neuroma patients and 600 healthy
control patients could be used to confirm long-held fears that cell
phones are bad for users' health.
Researchers point out, however, that only analog phones had been in
use for more than a decade at the time the study was conducted, and
that they could not determine if the same results would apply to the
long-term use of digital phones.
Preliminary Results
The institute's report was released as part of a larger international
study known as Interphone, coordinated by the World Health
Organization's cancer research institute. The results of the Swedish
study need to be confirmed in additional studies before final
conclusions can be drawn, the researchers note.
The results, although preliminary, are concerning. In addition to a
doubling of acoustic neuroma risk for long-term cell phone users,
researchers says that when they took into account the side of the
head, they found that the risk was almost four times higher on the
side where the cell phone was normally used.
Acoustic neuromas usually grow over a period of years before being
diagnosed and occur in less than one adult per 100,000, per year, the
researchers say.
The Interphone study will take into account the study on acoustic
neuromas, along with a number of other types of brain cancer in
assessing the risk of low-level exposure to radio frequency magnetic
fields. The research is being concentrated in countries that have the
longest and highest use of mobile phones, such as Sweden, the U.K.,
Denmark, Norway, and Germany.

Ilena is not an intelligent or reasonable person. That aside, here we have
yet another gadget of the 21st century. It is coming under fire and the
thing that really gets me is that thousands, possibly millions of dollars by
the time this will all be over will be spent to look for rare diseases
"caused" or "linked" to cell phone usage. I remember when microwaves came
out that we were all going to die of some nasty cancer from "nuking" our
food. Now, of course, you can't build a new kitchen without a microwave as
a standard equipment. On my desk right now I have an Ipod, digital camera,
desktop, laptop with wireless, PDA with wireless, speakers, and a lamp and
under it I have a wireless modem and a printer. I don't glow at night.
We have to approach these topics with a little bit of common sense and we
need to take these "studies" with more than a grain of salt.

Now..who is ignorant. You most certainly can build a new kitchen without a
microwave.

Yes oh literal one. It is POSSIBLE - merely that a microwave is considered
standard equipment (let me know if you don't understand "standard) in most
modern kitchens. But hey, when you lose as many arguments to me as you
have, I guess you just reach for any old straw.

Some people build their own homes. They can do whatever they wish.
Or
They pay the builder. They decide what they want in their new kitchen.

Unlike..you, I am not here to argue.

Do you have a microwave, Jan?

No, I did not argue that. I stated facts.

You either argued that microwaves aren't standard equipment in
kitchens, or you misunderstood another common use of the English
language. In other words, you're either a fool or a cretin.
Why are we all still so surprised by the depths of Jan's ignorance?
It's not like she doesn't strive to provide fresh examples of it.

Cell phones are really flea power devices, with the output so low it is
really trivial. If you want to see problems, look at those living near the
3 million watt UHF TV station broadcasting antennas or near some high power
transmission lines. You can light a fluorescent tube with stray electricity
near those transmission lines.

Incorrect assumption.
The personality type that is glued to cell use is more prone to ALL
diseases. The phone doesn't do it.

Vern, have you ever provided anything, ever, to back up any of your
ridiculous blanket assertions?

I love it that Jan insists on jumping in with

Does she not understand that when she butts in
with her contradictions about things (such as debate
over 'standard') that indeed she IS arguing the point ??????

Which is typically involved arguing a point. Do you have a brain? You know
what, don't answer that - you might hurt yourself trying to think of an
answer.
