Former FDA Chief Charged
Lester Crawford, the former chief of the Food and Drug Administration,
was charged with lying about his ownership of stock in companies
regulated by the agency.
The Justice Department accused Mr. Crawford of falsely reporting that
he sold stock in the companies when in fact he continued holding onto
shares in the firms. Financial disclosure forms released under the
Freedom of Information Act show that during at least part of his
tenure atop the FDA, he or his wife held stock in companies that have
some of their business regulated by the agency, including
Kimberly-Clark and Teleflex, which make medical devices, food
distributor Sysco, and agricultural biotechnology company Embrex, on
whose board Dr. Crawford once sat.
