The crocodile has an immune system which attaches to bacteria and
tears it apart and it explodes. It's like putting a gun to the head of
the bacteria and pulling the trigger.
-- Scientist Adam Britton
SYDNEY, Australia (Reuters) -- Scientists in Australia's tropical
north are collecting blood from crocodiles in the hope of developing a
powerful antibiotic for humans, after tests showed that the reptile's
immune system kills the HIV virus.
The crocodile's immune system is much more powerful than that of
humans, preventing life-threatening infections after savage
territorial fights which often leave the animals with gaping wounds
and missing limbs.
"They tear limbs off each other and despite the fact that they live in
this environment with all these microbes, they heal up very rapidly
and normally almost always without infection," said U.S. scientist
Mark Merchant, who has been taking crocodile blood samples in the
Northern Territory.
Initial studies of the crocodile immune system in 1998 found that
several proteins (antibodies) in the reptile's blood killed bacteria
that were resistant to penicillin, such as Staphylococcus aureus or
golden staph, Australian scientist Adam Britton told Reuters on
Tuesday. It was also a more powerful killer of the HIV virus than the
human immune system.
"If you take a test tube of HIV and add crocodile serum it will have a
greater effect than human serum. It can kill a much greater number of
HIV viral organisms," Britton said from Darwin's Crocodylus Park, a
tourism park and research centre.
Britton said the crocodile immune system worked differently from the
human system by directly attacking bacteria immediately an infection
occurred in the body.
"The crocodile has an immune system which attaches to bacteria and
tears it apart and it explodes. It's like putting a gun to the head of
the bacteria and pulling the trigger," he said.
For the past 10 days Britton and Merchant have been carefully
collecting blood from wild and captive crocodiles, both saltwater and
freshwater species. After capturing a crocodile and strapping its
powerful jaws closed the scientists extract blood from a large vein
behind the head.
"It's called a sinus, right behind the head, and it's very easy just
to put a needle in the back of the neck and hit this sinus and then
you can take a large volume of blood very simply," said Britton.
The scientists hope to collect enough crocodile blood to isolate the
powerful antibodies and eventually develop an antibiotic for use by
humans.
"We may be able to have antibiotics that you take orally, potentially
also antibiotics that you could run topically on wounds, say diabetic
ulcer wounds; burn patients often have their skin infected and things
like that," said Merchant.
However, the crocodile's immune system may be too powerful for humans
and may need to be synthesised for human consumption.
"There is a lot of work to be done. It may take years before we can
get to the stage where we have something to market," said Britton.

If the effective substance turns out to be patentable, the scientists
will
be a celebrated part of organized medicine.
If the substance is found to be non-patentable, in a few years you will
find yourself viciously attacking those very same individuals as
idiotic alternative researchers who do sloppy work with no evidence.
You won't even know how or why, you will only know with a certainty
that these people are wrong and evil or stupid.

Just two examples:
Placitaxel from Taxus, used to treat ovarian cancer. Non-patentable.
Artemisinine from Artemisia, used to treat malaria. Non-patentable.
Both developed by mainstream, scientific medicine, scientifically shown
to be effective.
Seen anyone that you think is affiliated with 'organized medicine'
attack those? Have you?
Maybe they didn't know about this? Well, now they do. I'd like to see
you hold your breath waiting for 'them' to start an attack.
So nice of you to join the discussion, even better that you leave if you
have nothing to add but paranoid delusions.

aw come on, I'm sure that we'll find out that crocodile blood has been
used for eons by native shamans.
Obviously alternative medicine be subverted by evil organized medicine
for nefarious purposes. (insert evil laughter here)

Obviously some cases would occur.
But I don't think these qualify.
Taxol (Placitaxel) was discovered as an anti-tumor
agent in 1967, so too much new research was not required
to validate it for its newly discovered properties.
Treatment is still costly, so it's not unprofitable
despite being unpatented.
Besides, the drug development was done by NIH,
so I am not sure what's the point you think
you are making.
Artemisinin was developed by Chinese scientists
in 1972.
I am also not sure what you are proving by changing
locale and time. Obviously times change, professional
values change both by locale and time, etc.
Eg to the idea that "cover up"s are done sometimes, you
could similarly disprove it by going back to things like
colloidal silver or thalidomaide. Back then, phamaceuticals
didn't cover up these mistakes, surely that proves that
there couldn't be any cover-ups ?

Those are alt tactics. Ever see a wonder potion that was devloped by the
group down the road? Nope. They are usually in the Andes, or Antatrica....

I do not recall any 'cover-up' regarding Thalidomide. What I do recall
is that the FDA was very s---l---o---w in approving it for use...so that
no baby was born deformed in the US after a US prescription of Thalidomide.

OK, take a look at these two web pages and decide which one represents
"True Scientists"
The first one sells a small bottle of liquid called 'The antidote"
http://www.biologicalmiracle.com/
The second one belongs to one of the scientists mentioned in the article.

Funny you should mention colloidal silver. It's still touted as a great
cure by the alt-med community.

Actually, it is part of the allopathic community.

Of course it is, just like naturopathy, chiropractic, reflexology and
Rife zappers. They are all a part of allopathy, because "allopathy"
means "not homeopathy". Only homeopathy is not allopathy, unless
Samuel Hahnemann was wrong
Do try to keep up.

Say you where to light a match and with all that hot air your spewing
you get blown up and get burns over half your body. If the hospital
you arrive at does not believe in silver bandages, you are DEAD.
Conclusions:
Silver was demonstrated to be effective at killing the
antibiotic-resistant strains tested. The silver-coated dressing was
particularly rapid at killing the tested bacteria and was effective
against a broader range of bacteria. Silver may be a useful
prophylactic or therapeutic agent for the prevention for wound
colonization by organisms that impeded healing, including
antibiotic-resistant bacteria. (AJIC Am J Infect Control
1998:26:572-7).

Did I say anything about the effectiveness of silver?
No. I was talking about the use of the word "allopathy", and I was
agreeing with you.
Do try to keep up.
<snip evidence that I was right and silver is used in allopathy>

Bullshit. Colloidal silver most certainly is not any sort of standard
medical treatment.
Coating things like catheters with silver is standard.
