On the other hand, in a "disaster conference" in NYC
in 1989 or so, we listened to radio tapes from the
multiple MCIs in Washington, DC, back on 13-Jan-1982.
One snippet had (someone...) relaying a request from
the folk in the subway crash to:
" and bring the Hurst Tool, whatever that is "
( That part is seared in what's left of my brain... I remember
the audience laughing at the "whatever that is" portion.)
given the years here (1982 and 1988 or so) and that "Hurst Tool"
was the common name we were using in DC and NYC, I'm back
to doubting "Jaws of Life" was the phrase in Philly in 1978.

I know in Canada, during early to mid '80s, "jaws of Life" was the
common name used when referring to the tools as far a Joe Public was
concerned. I would think that today that is still the case as much of
the public still thinks they are just the "jaws of life"

Then the question becomes when did they use the phrase? Since CC
tends to bounce back and forth in flash backs, did the guy use the
phrase now or contemporaneous with the crash?
Kurt (I am beginning to think we are taking this WAY too seriously)

We still have one. Is (or was) on our state's minimum equipment list for
rescue services. At the time, it was on the list and was eligible for grant
money to purchase. For most of our years we were a (IMHO) well practiced
hand tool extrication crew. The Jaws of Life came mutual aid from
neighboring stations 10-12 miles away. Most times, we would turn them around
en route. We did in time purchase a Kinman tool which serves us nicely.
The Blackhawk is still handy to those who know how to handle it.

| You are correct. A well trained, well organized crew is just as fast as
a crew with a set of Jaws. More than 20 years ago I was around some
contests...
