Reno man taken to hospital after self-castration procedure

Staff Report

A 50-year-old Reno man told authorities he castrated himself
to lower his libido and learned of the procedure on the
Internet, police said.

Washoe Medical Center officials cited privacy issues on why
they could not release any information on the man.

About 1:30 a.m. Monday, police said the man called 911 and
asked for help because he could not stop the bleeding from a
self-castration operation.

Reno police and medics responded to the man’s home near
Brinkby Avenue and Robinhood Drive, and he was taken by
ambulance to the hospital.

Hospital officials said the man successfully castrated
himself, police reported. No further information was available.

“The man obviously needs some sort of counseling,” Reno
police Lt. Ron Donnelly said.

It also reduced his risk of having a heart attack.

Sounds like something right out of "Reno 911."

Not exactly.

But, once respond to guy who cut off his penis and then proceeded to run
down Seventh Avenue in Manhattan waving his amputated part in one hand and
the razor blade he used in the other.

After capturing him (the cops wouldn't go near him but offered to shoot him
and put him out of his misery) we bundled him off to the hospital where the
psychiatrist on duty told us that sexual self mutilation is fairly common.
There is even a diagnostic term for it. Although most patients aren't so
public.

Locally we used to have a guy we called "Charlie the Chopper." Charlie
didn't amputate his penis once -- he did it three times. He would whack it
off, we would make the FNG retrieve it, the docs would sew it back on, and
then a year or so later Charlie would whack it off again.

His most creative approach was a guillotine he made by taping razor blades
to a sash window. He laid his member on the sill and then slammed the
window shut.

The next time he used a pair of hedge trimmers. Being dull and not very
well suited to the task, that only produced a partial amputation, which I'm
pretty sure the FNG was happy about.

I am surprised at even two responses. I thought this would
be a very rare scenario, but it looks like every town has
their own chopper.
