WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Insider Notes from United
Press International for Aug. 13:
While its accepted folk wisdom that prescription drug
prices in the U.S. are excessive, a recent breakdown of
costs associated with some popular prescription drugs
will make many reach for their heart medication. U.S.
Department of Commerce budget analyst Sharon L. Davis and
Mary Palmer, a budget analyst at the Bureau of Economic
Analysis, Office of Budget and Finance have broken down
the price of a number of popular prescription drug's
active ingredients as opposed to the final cost at the
pharmacy. The results will doubtless give heartburn to
drug company execs when consumers find out the rate of
markups.
People taking Xanax for anxiety attacks will probably
press the panic button when they realize that the
consumer price for 100 1 mg tablets, $136.79 includes
$0.024 worth of general active ingredients, resulting in
a price markup of 569,958 percent.
People taking the antidepressant Prozac will probably up
their dosage when they learn that their price of $247.47
for 100 20 mg tablets includes $0.11 for the cost of
general active ingredients, representing a slim profit
margin markup of only 224,973 percent.
Taking Norvasec for your hypertension? No wonder - your
100 10 mg tablets just set you back $188.29 for tablets
whose active ingredients cost $0.14, representing a
markup of 134,493 percent. People suffering from high
blood pressure who take Zestril get off relatively
lightly; their 100 20 mg tablets will set them back
$89.89; with general active ingredients costing $3.20,
the price markup is a paltry 2,809 percent. The issue may
even percolate into the presidential campaign; on Aug. 11
John Kerry said that President George W. Bush is
obstructing bipartisan efforts in Congress to allow drug
imports from Canada.
