New soy cancer claim nearing FDA approval

The soy food market soared in 2000 after the federal Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) certified the link between soy protein and
improved cardiac health.
Now, an anticipated new soy health label claim could offer the
industry a fresh infusion of consumer interest.
FDA is expected to approve a new soy food cancer health claim in late
November, when the agency's 270-day review period ends. The claim
maintains consumption of soy protein-based foods may reduce the risk
of breast, prostate, and colon cancer. Those, according to Geri
Berdak, spokesman with the Solae Co., are the majority of cancers
Americans suffer.
Solae, a venture of DuPont and Bunge Limited, petitioned FDA for the
claim, which is supported by 58 research studies. While the link
between soy and cancer prevention has long been suspected, Berdak
said FDA approval would enhance soy's consumer appeal.
"The effort behind this claim has been a three-year process of
collating and analyzing data," she told FarmWeek. "We're leaders in
industry health research, and the health claim is a way we are able
to take data we either manage or track and make it available to
consumers."
The university of Illinois helped review claim data.
Soyfoods Association of North America Executive Director Nancy
Chapman noted tremendous growth in soy sales and products began in
1999 when FDA OK'd a claim stating that consumption of 25 grams of
soy protein a day could help reduce heart disease risks.
Chapman cited 20-25 percent market growth in the year following
approval of the claim: "It would be surprising if (a cancer claim)
doesn't have an impact on soy food sales," she said.
According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 35 percent of U.S.
cancer deaths can be avoided through diet. Solae is a sponsor of
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation "Race for the Cure"
fundraising events, and Berdak reported foundation leaders are "very
strong proponents of soy."
Solae also is helping investigate the role of soy protein in sports
nutrition (reportedly promoting more rapid muscle recovery) and in
addressing women's health concerns such as menopause and bone health.
Meanwhile, the company has attempted to raise consumer awareness of
soy benefits through its humorous "Protein in Unexpected Places" TV
commercials.
The ads identify products such as Snapple-A-Day beverages and V-8
Splash Smoothies which bear Solae's soy protein seal. "The promise to
consumers is that they'll get a high-quality source of protein, it
will be good for them, and it will be great-tasting," Berdak said.

The terrorist mission of Jesus stated in the Christian bible:
"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not so send
peace, but a sword.
"For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the
daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in
law.
"And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
