| Polio Vaccine Contamination Raises Cancer Concerns

A review into contaminated polio vaccine has been ordered
by Australia's Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott, after
an investigation showed at least two batches were
released for use after testing positive for
contamination, according to a report in The Age.
The vaccine, released for use in the 1950'ss and 1960's
is being investigated for possible ties to cancer.
The vaccine in question was reportedly contaminated with
the monkey virus, as the vaccine is made using monkey
kidney cells.
At this point, there is no confirmed link between the
contaminated vaccine and cancer in humans.
The virus, called Simian Virus 40, or SV40 was in close
to 3 million Salk polio vaccine doses, produced between
1956 and 1962, The Age reported.
The SV40 has been linked to several rare cancers in lab
hamsters, including brain, brain and blood, and
mesothelioma.
Australia has the world's highest rates of mesothelioma
cancer and researchers have found SV40 in these tumors,
according to The Age.
Professor Bruce Robinson told ABC news in Australia that
just because the monkey virus is found in mesothelioma
tumors it is unlikely to be related to the polio vaccine.
"The current feeling is that probably the virus has come
from that polio vaccine because we don't know," ABC
Australia quoted Robinson as saying.
