| Call to promote herbal plants

Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard university Siraj Hussain urged scientists
and experts of Ayurveda and Unani to come forward for the conservation and
growth of herbal plants.
While addressing a three-day national symposium on "Emerging Trends in Indian
Medicinal Plants" on Friday at UP Council for Science and Technology (UPCST)
auditorium, Hussain said that the consumption and use of herbal products was
increasing all over the world by leaps and bounds. The future of Ayurveda and
Unani was dependent on herbal plants, he added.
"Though the Ayurved and Unani medicines have always been in use, in the
present times their use is emphasised even more and they are very effective
too," he said and added that the drug manufacturers should ensure the
availability of such medicines.
"People should also be made aware of uses of such medicines and it did not
posed any health hazard," he remarked.
Director of UP Council for Science and Technology AN Pathak said that the
government was making all-out efforts for the conservation of herbal
medicinal plants and Ayurved and Unani stream of medicine. Attempts were
underway to identify new plants with medicinal properties and create
awareness among the public in this regard, he said.
Former director of the CDRI Nityanand said that the drug industry should
emphasise on quality and technical advancements should be taken care of.
Farmers should not only be trained to cultivate medicinal plants but also be
guided about how to market them, he said.
Those present on the occasion included Mahesh Pal, Vinay Kumari, Shamim Ahmed
Siddiqui, AP Singh and various other scientists and `vaidhs'.
