| Hello,
I recently began practicing yoga at home by following the Yoga Zone DVD
(beginner). The instructor frequently mentions the name of certain
poses, and sometimes he does not say what they mean. I was wondering
if somebody knows how these names came to be used to describe the
poses. So I guess what I would like to know is why they are named what
they are. If somebody can point to me to a good reference, that would
also be appreciated.
"Mountain pose". It's the one where you are standing tall with your
toes together and hands to your side.
"Cobra pose". laying down on your stomach, and bringing your upper-body
up.
"Corpse pose". laying down on your back and resting. Usually at the
end of the sequence of poses.
"Chakra". Something to do with meditation?
Thank you.

| Hi Hiroki,
The asanas are named in groups: animals, plants, birds, structures.
The name of the asana is the place to begin looking for its symbolic
meaning. Lets take MOUNTAIN--
strong ,massive, immovable, insurmountable, high, holy, awaiting works
to do. What does a mountain mean to you? Your inner strenght, your
immovability , your strivings, your insurmountable obstacle,
yourlofty ideals, AS you stand in this asana, and view it as asymbol,
your struggles to reach the top, the stretching of your body and the
effort of your mussels help you to see different aspects of yourselve,
and gain new insights.
As explained here all the asanas, while doing them, have some sort of
reflections. The rest of it can be found by yourselve.
I hope this gives you a little view regarding the names of the
asanas...
With compassion,
Puma
