I agree moon - The fact that something is subconscious suggests that it
is not open. The moment we become aware of a subconscious event it
becomes conscious.
The idea of a subconscious is an outdated 19th century notion. Who is
the gate keeper that tells the consciousness to keep some stuff
subconscious? Messy concept to begin with.

Yes.

Find a teacher. Or do very easy pranayama exercises like Ujai breath.
I remember experimenting with Kapalbhati years ago before I knew
better and I ended up hyperventilating. I thought that was what was
supposed to happen. Its not.

| Any advanced pranamaya without mula-uddiyana-jalandhara bandhas (BANDHA
TRAYA)
can be dangerous...Bandha Traya has an influence on the movement of
PRANA within the SUSHUMNA NADI,the central subtle channel like a tube.
Each bandha keeps prana within this boundedi circle. So no harm can be
seen...
If advanced pranayamas will be applied, then all the bandhas mostly
BANDHA TRAYA should be learned...
As to the subconsious opening, not only the pranayamas but while we
are applying any ASANA, we are trying to open our subconcious...Hatha
Yoga in a way is a sort of talking to the body ,or body is talking to
us...Each asana creates a certain meditative state of mind.Asanas are
named in groups of, animals, plants, birds, and structures. The name of
the asana is the place to look for its symbolic meaning.lets take
salamba sarvangasana ;reflections of this posture are inverted,
reversal, upside down, balance, shoulder width, bending the
will, pressure, discomfort, and many more....here reflections and
awareness are very essential while practising the postures.By these
reflections we start
self-discovery and self-observation... So this is how subconscious can
be opened...
In subconscious there is our selves....As an iceberg under the water...

bandhas are even more powerfull and dangerous to move energy, than
pranayama...
bandhas, stop all vital energy of the body, which creates voidness
(vacuum) inside and allows the more sutle energy to move faster
the most advisable thing to begin with, to remove physical blockages,
is the asanas.

| yes
Kapalbhati is a vitalizing practice.
It makes all the energy move very fast in the body, in order to remove
blockages of the brain very fast (and inside all sushuma)
better to begin with a pranayama that works more deply and
sloooowly.....in order to open the lungs, expand all energy
carefully...and help to still the mind...

yes...i never understood the diference between subconscious and
uncounscious....
or is conscious or is not....there' just one gate keeper: our mind...
i classify things like this:
(my point of view) <=> (those old psychologists)
universal consciousness <=> subconscious and uncounscious
phantasy <=> conscious
conscious or enlightned <=> (no answer?) perhaps a "genius"....
this was just to demonstrate that "conscious" is a very confusing
concept....all depends on the point of view...

| Hi Moon,
When saying no,are you telling that advanced pranayamas should be
carried out without having Bandha Traya?
The pranic energy is extremely dynamic and if it is not subjected to
strict control,it tends to dissipate itself. This control is effected
by binding the prana in three main energy centers ,the muladhara
chakra, the manipura chakra, and the vishuddha chakra, These centers
are important junctions of energy from which the subtle nadis radiate
and transmit the pranic energy to all the vital organs of the body. When
prana can be concentrated, regulated and bound at these centers, the
physiological effects of pranayama will be greatly enhanced and the
innerperception of the vital energy will become possible.
When the prana is bound at the base of the sushumna the process is
known mula bandha. When the prana is bound at the navel center ,it is
known as uddiyana bandha and when the pranic energy is concentrated at
the throat center, the process is known as jalandhara bandha. When the
three contractions are performed together, the process is known as
bandha traya or triple lock.
Here we are not talking about to remove the physical blockages, the
original question was about opening of subconscious, and we have came
to pranayama, and I have stated
these simple informations that every sadhaka knows...
Mindfullnes is a need for everyone of us...

Hi Puma,
no. it wasn't that what i said.
i mean: advanced pranaymas are classified as advanced, mainly, when
they are associated with retentions and bandhas.
in order:
(from less dangerous to more dangerous)
physical poses are meant to remove physical blockages
they are not meant to move energy.
but they will let energy to flow from a passive point of view; which
is, by removing blockages energy will flow spontaneously...
i'm not talking about advanced poses. but i presume that is not
dangerous, because we are limited by our physical limitations....or,
our physical limitations protect us....
------------
pranaymas move energy actively
basic pranayamas: dyafragmatic, sensitizing, complete, alternate, etc
(can be used together with asanas)
------
vitalizing is a little more advanced, like Stu realized...
----
intermediate advanced:
pranayamas with retention....
(retention is preparing bandhas)
---
advanced:
pranayamas with retention and bandhas (bandha is a particular case of
retention)
by creating the vacuum (void), bandhas (the 3 bandhas at the same time)
are intended to open sushuma, completely...
which is the 1st stage of the kundalini arousal: from the 1st to the
5th chakra...
this shouldn't be performed before asanas and basic pranayama, to open
lungs...otherwise could be dangerous...and never without a good
teacher...
---

we have to remove physical blockages before awakening the mind.
we can't jump steps
we can't go directly to enlightment, before going step by step:
1st - begin removing physical blockages with asanas
2 nd - begin moving energy with basic pranaymamas
(mean while you may begin with meditation/yoga nidra)
whenever we realize (or the teacher) that we are able to do
intermediate to advanced poses:
3rd - pranayamas with retention
.....advance poses....
4tt finally you can introduce bandhas
----
finally if the learner is lucky will have a kundalini arousal
(hopefully a benign one)
---
and then if is even much more lucky will reach enlightment...
(FINALLY the theme of our topic: how to open the "subconscious")
-------
Pretending to open the "subconscious" or reach enlightment, before
(step by step) removing blockages and so on, remembers those spam
emails:
"do you want an university diploma, without studying?"

| Hi Moon,
What we`ve got here is a failure to communicate...
Who said, or who wanted a university degree, without fullfilling the
requirements!
Pranayama means control of PRANA...This control can only be done by
KUMBHAKA, and KUMBHAKA applied with the BANDHAS...These are known by
all the sadhakas.
KUNDALINI AROUSAL is something that should not be discussed here...As
it is far away
from our subject matter...And it has no relation with
PRANAMAYA...Samething can be said for ENLIGHTENMENT too. As there are
many people around, that they have been enlightened and they really
realized what KUNDALINI means...But these people do not know what
PRANAMAYA is nor what an ASANA means!
Unless we do not get into the symbolism, and if we do not know what an
ASANA is saying to us,rest are all nice stories...What do mean all
these 7 chakras, are they really have petals on them, with the Sanskrit
letters? Or are these possible levels of CONSCIOUSNESS? A real sadhaka
should know these...
These all have to be known at the beginning of YOGA, a real SADHAKA
knows all these.
Opening subconscious and enlightenment are not the samething! They are
seperate subjects...
All I am saying that let`s not mix the minds of the beginners,if a
sadhaka does not carry out 8 steps of PATANJALI, then he/she must be at
least honest while giving advices around.
We have to understand what our friends are saying, and why they are
saying it?
Otherwise, it means we do not listen to ourselves...If we know who we
are then...
Before getting any KUNDALINI AROUSAL or ENLIGHTENMENT, we should know
ourselves, why we do act the way it is! without knowing who we are, and
why we act this way, neither kundalini nor enlightenment happens! This
must be the teachings to the beginners...Subconscious is the part
belonging to ourselves which is in a shade area, first our aim should be
illuminating this shade area. And our friend`s question is a good one
in respect to this point. Regret to state that non of us here have
given any satisfactory reply to this person yet...Why we are trying to
show our knowledge? What makes us to act this way? What are the our
shade areas on this regard? Are extra questions that must be answered,
instead giving replies to our friend`s request...
With respect to all,
Puma

Breathing Practices and Pranayama
by Swami Jnaneshvara Bharati
Home page: SwamiJ.com
Preparation for meditation: In Yoga Meditation, breath training is
essential preparation for deep meditation and samadhi, on the path to
Self-Realization. Breath is the bridge between the body and the mind.
Regulate breath, and the body and mind will follow.
Diaphragmatic breathing
Brief descriptions: Below are brief descriptions of a broad range of
breathing practices. These outlines give general descriptions, and are
not intended to be complete instructions in doing the practices. To do
the practices, it is important to have personal training, not merely
relying on written words.
Contents of this page:
Basics of Breath
Breath awareness
Diaphragmatic breathing
Irregularities of breath
Nasal wash
Sandbag
Crocodile posture
Corpse posture
Soham mantra
Balancing Breathing
Alternate Nostril breathing
Balancing breath by using the mind
Two-to-one breathing
Ujjai
Brahmari
Spinal breath
Walking breath
Agnisara
Vigorous Breathing Practices
Deergha swasam (Complete Breath)
Kapalabhati (Shining skull)
Bhastrika (Bellows)
Agniprasana (Breath of fire)
Advanced Practices
Retention
Bandhas
Elongating breath
Practices are known by different names: To avoid confusion, it is
useful to note that the collective practice, of which breathing and
pranayama practices are considered a part, may be known by different
names when used by different modern teachers. This is particularly true
with the practices dealing with the spinal energy and the vigorous
practices. The breathing and pranayama practices may be known
collectively, or considered to be part of pranayama alone, hatha yoga,
raja yoga, kundalini yoga, kriya yoga, tantra, or simply yoga. Other
systems will use the practices as part of a modern trademarked or brand
name yoga practice, such as those containing either a Sanskrit word or
a man's name (See the article on ancient versus modern yoga).
Online practices: A few online, recorded breathing practices are at
this link.
Basics of breath
Remember to build the foundation: First, you establish the basics of
breathing. If you will quickly scan the topics listed in this section,
immediately below, you will see that they are not so much breathing
techniques as they are methods of establishing basic breath awareness,
and elimination of irregularities. With breath training, one of the
biggest mistakes is to skip the foundation, and go directly into the
techniques themselves.
The science of breath
begins with awareness,
and ends with awareness.
It begins and ends with awareness: Breath awareness is so important
that, in a sense, you can say that the whole science of breath begins
with awareness, and ends with awareness. Everything else, in the
middle, is preparation for awareness.
top
Breath awareness:
Have an attitude of curiosity: The entire science of breath begins with
awareness of what the breath is doing. To do this means to have an
attitude of being an explorer, an interior researcher. It means
cultivating an attitude of curiosity that allows you to wander around
inside of yourself noticing the way in which breath operates. It's like
the way a child might take apart a toy to see how it works, only in
this case nothing is being taken apart.
Cultivate an attitude of curiosity,
of being an explorer,
an interior researcher.
You are just being still, closing your eyes and snooping around the
entire breathing apparatus, whether the gross body, or subtler aspects.

Do whatever you want to. It is your body, your mind, your soul.
But don't advise anyone to do bandhas, namely begginers....
| |
|
| Dear Moon:
Thanks so much your kind advice. Please read others` posters carefully.
If you have a hard time getting what others say, kindly ask for their
clarification. But do not attempt to pretend you have got the idea.
Because, I see that you are having a hard time in getting what others
are saying.
No one here has stated, for any beginner, to use any advanced pranayama
tecnique...
By the way, I know that there is no soul. If you believe such an idea
it is good for you.
So when advising others on any matter like this one, you have to be
careful and try to understand his/her knowledge...Do not take others
same as good yourselve...
With compassion,
Puma

If by subconscious you mean stuff that you have experienced but not
processed and is still taking up space, clanging around in the mind
field,
and you have some specific psychological issue that is troubling you,
the easiest is
to breath fully, making sure to breath into lower lungs, and feel the
feeling that is bugging you. feel means to feel where it hits you in
your body, as opposed to emotion.
focus on the feeling in your body, keep breathing, breathe into the
feeling, the emotion will come along with memories, events, then just
go with the flow.
I have used this technique. It can lead you back through forgotten
childhood events, to birth, to life in womb, to conception,
preconception.
Some claim it wll take you to memories of previous lives.
