Author Mantras - Side Effects?

Hello

I've been reading about chanting and repeating mantras, and the basic idea
is:

Mantras are a sound / vibration, and when uttered they produce a form of
vibration / effect that can alter certain things or alleviate certain
situations.

For example, there are mantras for bringing abundance, mantras for removing
obstacles, for seeing behind the veil of illusion, etc...

Now the simple forumla is to repeat the mantra many times (with a certain
mental attitude).

This was part one of my observation, any comments / corrections /
suggestions are welcome

The second part is a question:
Are there any side effects to chanting a certain mantra / mantras?

Please comments,

Would you share with us what/who you have been reading?

Also, I suggest you stop reading and start doing them :-)

This is correct.

This is superstition.

This is a low level understanding of the meaning/purpose/function/power
of mantra.

The "formula" or purpose of repeating the mantra is to replace
ineffective and damaging "garbage" thoughts with sublime thought. This
is the requirement for "many" repetitions. The junk we think all day
comprises thoughts which are repeated many times over many years. The
antidote to this junk noise is replacing it with spiritually tuned
sound or mantra.

Yes there are a great many "side effects" and they are all good! You
can not be hurt in any way when connecting to or calling into the
Universe unless your intent is evil. Even then any effect you
experience will only serve to remind you of the error of your way.

Is there a particular mantra you are drawn to? Are you interested in
mantra (japa) meditation? Here is a serious "old school" resource.

I'm not new here, you've probably answered me before.

I'm reading / listening to material by Thomas Farrand, the sacred words of
power.

That's not what I learned from the my resources (see above).

Yes, in general, I do agree that it serves to replace the mind's thoughts,
however, it must have an additional role, otherwise why there exists a
variation of mantras?

So, it is okay to call mantras even w/o guidance?

No certain mantras, I have chosen to repeat the one of the Ganesha mantra
for 40 days, then will go to another one.
Though I want to stick to one which can balance everything, and at the same
time I want to see / experience its effect.

Elias,

Yes you are correct. I see that we had a conversation about fasting a
year or two ago.

My apology. I should have said, welcome back, seems its been a while
:-)

Same reason there are so many flavors of ice cream, I suppose.

Like most things yoga there is plenty of guidance on basic Japa. One
can always start with the classics like "om". If and when a more
personal mantra is needed to move one along their spiritual path then
guidance will be forth coming.

I chose a mantra that seemed to "speak" to me very strongly. So
strongly that when I first started using it, I got scared. It felt like
the words were taking over my mind. Kind of like a song you can't get
out of your head. My reaction to the mantra was very compelling. So I
backed off of saying it for a couple days and asked someone I trust
here in alt.yoga about it. I got some reassuring advice and some
information about the mantra itself. So heartened I returned to using
it and this time things were much calmer and more nearly how I have
experienced other mantras.
