Author yoga question

Hi boys and girls!

I'm pretty new to all kinds of Yoga and now I've a question which may sound
very stupid to you guys... well, it isn't really MY question but... well,
where shall I write it down if not in a yoga group..
To get to the point.......

"Is Yoga only for people who are thin, are keen on sports, movable,...?"

This question was asked by a friend of mine who thinks she's to fat (I call
it like she said it *rollingeyes*) - (160cm, 115kg) to do Hatha and/or
Kundalini

...please don't hit me for the question.. :-(

Hi Najara Djinn,
there is no stupid question only stupid answers.

Allthough you'll find on the titles of Yoga books like "fat
blasting/burning Yoga" adorable young supermodellike thin girls, this
does not display the reality of Yoga classes. In Yoga classes these
people are a minority - at least in classes that I teached! :-)
You'll find people of all kind of "body-sulptures", grades of
flexibility, age and gender in a normal beginner class.

It depends on the person you'll asking for if she likes to practice Yoga
or not. Of course it is easier to practice Yoga if you weight less and
are more flexible.
But if you weight less and are more flexible many things are easier!

Why did Kennedy put the tasks on the USA to send a man to the moon?
"Not because they are easy but because they are hard!" ;-)

Good luck!

Hi,

And welcome to alt.yoga :-)

Yoga is for people who want it. Not just for those who flaunt it.

>From infants to seniors of any build, condition or disposition.

You start from where you are and grow into better and better condition.

I have seen yoga techniques adopted for bed ridden patients.

All that is needed is willingness and patience.

Good luck!

No. A good teacher or class would cater for people who are not thin or
can't do sports due to injury and are not very movable. It's rewarding
to see such people improve through the yoga.

Some classes round here cater especially for things like weight loss or
back problems. One school even has a device for getting people out of
a wheelchair onto the mat and back again.

I found Kundalini hard work when I tried it, though I went straight in
at intermediate and I suppose it asks you to do what you can. It's not
competitive. If you can only do something for a few times at a fraction
of the speed of your neighbour who cares? Some Kundalini teachers will
ask that people work eyes closed which reduces the problem of feeling
ashamed or pushing yourself to do the same as others.

Hatha is more gentle but still good. Maybe less of a cardio workout
than Kundalini but can still get you warmed up. It gives strength and
flexibility.

Other styles include Asthanga, which on the workout scale may come
between Hatha and Kundalini. I'd be tempted to try it if I could find
a teacher on a day I'm free.

A recipie for fitness I was once told at a gym is resistance training,
cardio and flexibility.

Outside the purely physical, Yoga's philosophy should help with improved
confidence, seeing yourself as beautiful, helping you to deal with things
like diet in a good way.

At that weight/height ratio I'd suggest seeing a doctor first, certainly
before increasing cardiovascular activity. Body Mass Index is 45. It's
proportional to weight.

Why would we do that?

It occurs to me that the question of being fat and doing yoga is a
frequently asked question. I trust you are still taking notes for the
FAQ, Omjaroo.

Here you could add "What is Laya yoga" and "What is Kriya yoga".

I think it's a lot of questions already. So what about answers? Each of
these subjects could fill an entire book. I hope the project won't turn
out to be too big.

Some may be an entire book some are more simple:
