A majority of the new students on campus are enrolled in graduate programs.
The Computer Professionals Program continues to attract students, with 52
new arrivals this fall. Also, two new co-op programs for professionals - in
accounting and education - will enroll a group of students in October.
Most of the 57 new undergraduate students are from the U.S., with a third of
those learning the Transcendental Meditation® technique upon arrival or
shortly before coming.
As usual, the student body is extremely diverse, with students coming from
62 countries: Algeria, Angola, Cameroon, Comoros Islands, Egypt, Ghana,
Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Spain and the Canary
Islands, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Poland, Norway, Finland,
Estonia, Latvia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldava, Romania, Serbia, Turkey,
Israel, and Jordan.
Also, Iran, Armenia, Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Georgia, India,
Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Mongolia, China, Taiwan (China), Thailand,
Vietnam, Burma, Cambodia, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia,
Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador,
Guyana, Peru, Venezuela, Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

What's up with Ethiopia? This must be due to some federal program or
something--much like the thousands of unemployable Somalis who found their
way to small New England towns (and then on to the welfare roles)...

If you are referring to the Somalis, I don't believe many have gone in to
graduate or college programs--few speak English. Heck they're having a hard
time finding docs who will perform clitorectomies on their young girls
(seriously).

Ethiopians enrolling in MUM's graduate
programs.

Where is the money coming from is the question. Of course it is certainly
possible that large numbers of Somalis just decided to enroll at MUM, it
just seems improbable to me that it wasn't for some other reason.

I don't see Somalia among the list of countries
from which students have enrolled at MUM. Do you?

I assume that either there's one or more wealthy TMers in the USA with a
soft spot in their hearts for Ethiopians who are paying the bill, or that
MUM and the government of Ethiopia have some kind of agreement (maybe the
President is a TMer?) or both.
It's doubtful that it's a US government program.

| The Ethiopians already have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science
from Ethiopian schools. They are admitted to MUM for an M.S. in
CompSci, and they take classes for 7.5 months at the Fairfield campus,
then get a job for a couple years as programmers, during which time
they continue as distance ed students at MUM, and pay off their tuition
bill to MUM ( http://mum.edu/compro/ --
http://www.mum.edu/compro/structure.html ). If they don't get a job,
they don't owe any money to MUM. It's a good deal for both parties
financially, and at least some of the students will continue TM after
going home to Ethiopia with enough money to buy a house or start a biz.

Wow. You mean they're *not* unemployables
looking for a government handout? Vaj is
going to be very disappointed.
