| Howdy!
I have a question about "Namaste"...
When a person gives the salutation "Namaste" (I bow to that little corner
within you that contains the entire universe) it seems to me as if it could
almost be considered as blasphamous by some people unless the person giving
the salutation has first recognized it within him/herself.
Wa'ja think?

Within Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions the idea of a God separate
and superior to the individual human is indivisible from the belief system.
Anything that smacks of pantheism (such as the implication inherent in
"Namaste") is blasphemous. This was one of the main reasons Jesus got
Himself nailed to a cross ("Are you the Son of God?" "Thou hast said." "The
Lord our God is One." <sound of garments being rent> ). On the other hand,
how many Christians would know the meaning of Namaste? And, of course, you
could always say that it is said in recognition of the indwelling of the
spirit. Amazing that someone would except what is essentially possession
(Jesus in your heart, Holy Spirit) but not identity with the Divine...

| a friend of mine came to yoga classes with me every week for several months
before remarking that it was nice to bow and say "have a nice day" at the
end of each class. she'd misheard it, or didn't understand and her mind
grabbed the closest appropriate phrase.
also, watch out, i've had outlook spellcheck try to change my namaste into
lambaste!
have a nice day,
nancy

| After all the recent discussion and just when I had decided to stop
using namaste after all my alt.yoga messages because somehow it felt
disingenuous... Along comes Nancy with her charming anecdote and
brilliant observation.
Now I am conflicted :-) Oh, well. Guess I'll have to meditate on it.

Technically you are going to have to contemplate it. Meditation
suggests subject/object unification. One can't meditate on anything,
one simply meditates...

| Stu,
Thanks for the correction :-)
Are you saying one "is" meditation?
