Don,

Errr...Ugh...Huhh?... Did someone just hijack alt.yoga? Who? Who would
do such a thing? And why? Why would someone do such a thing? Was it
something I said about the dearth of sharing on this group :-)

Could this be someone's attempt to integrate a legitimate forum on
their website with usenet?

The tone and syntax of many of the posts seems very similar to me. I
get the impression English is not the first language of the writer(s).
That would be consistent with all the posts being written by the same
person(s). On the other hand if someone was uploading their forum to
usenet somehow, all the headers could end up looking all the same.

At any rate, it certainly was odd to see 71 new posts. I suppose I
should welcome a few of the new posters to alt.yoga and see what
happens.

What's your take?

Greetings Jared

In this comment you seem to be correct. The site
http://www.weight-loss-guide.net has a 'Yoga Talk' forum in which these people
reside. I'm guessing that, as you said, the posts are somehow being uploaded
into alt.yoga via mirroring. There is another site that does the same thing [
http://www.pahealthsystems.com/Yoga/ ]

Shane,

Thanks for the URLs. Interesting, but how did you get to the
weight-loss site?

I visited the weight-loss site. Seems they are complaining about the
same problem there. The health-systems site is simply a Usenet gate-way
for their clients. Their posts would show up just like any other Usenet
post (unique email, IDs etc).

I'm thinking we are dealing with someone who has no idea what they're
doing or someone who is deliberately trying to hi-jack or spam the
group. I am leaning towards a unenlightened (bit of yoga humor) forum
administrator versus the Usenet terrorist. Either way it's not
correct. So I think complaints to the various ISPs along the path of
the posts is still warranted. I suppose if anyone can figure out
who's posting then we could make a direct appeal to cut it out :-)

Let's see how the replies to various posts play out.

Sheesh, I can't even find my thread on "what difference does it
make" :-(

A troll always has an agenda; we just don't know yet what this agenda
is. I'm pretty sure that it will become clear before long. Otherwise,
they've done all of that work for nothing.

Actually, the headers don't show that. What the headers show is that
they are posting using one and the same Usenet account (which does not
constitute a breach of netiquette as far as I know), and the same Usenet
client, something called "newsSync (Weight Loss Guide)". The email
addresses seem to be real, but mangled (slightly disguised) in the same
way, probably done automatically as a counter measure against spammers.

As far as I can tell, these people are students of yoga, and are
completely on topic for alt.yoga. The only suspicious thing about them
might be that they stay UNUSUALLY MUCH on topic.. ;-)

I'm not going to worry about them. In fact, I've already answered some
of their posts, and wished them welcome. Let's see what comes out of
that.

I went there too. The persons who were complaining were obviously people
reading news the normal way, not clueless guests at the site. For
instance, one of the complainers wrote that she at first suspected her
ISP's nntp server to be at fault. I believe that's an indication of a
normal Usenet poster, not your typical clueless websurfer.

No, what they are doing is that they try to bring traffic to their site
or provide for more interesting content by publishing content from
Usenet. I saw some of my own posts to alt.yoga on their site.

Publishing Usenet posts on a website is not really an offence. If it
were, then Google would have to stop doing the same thing. What I find a
bit distasteful, though, is (apart from their moderation policy) the
fact that they don't tell their members that they are on Usenet, and not
just on some tiny little web forum..

> I am leaning towards a unenlightened (bit of yoga humor) forum

Terrorists??? Yikes, you're really using some strong words here! :-)
They have been quite nice, so far, and since the newcomers are writing
in a moderated web forum, I bet they'll stay nice too..

I think it may be quite easy to figure out who is who.. All the
addresses are mangled in the same way:

"axis@aol-dot-com.no-spam.invalid"

is not a valid email addres, but if you look behind the at-sign, and
remove all the obvious spam deterrents, you get "aol-dot-com", and
again, if you do the obvious translation, this in turn turns into
"aol.com".

This, suffixed to the name and the at-sign, IS a valid email address.

Elementary, my dear Watson!

> Let's see how the replies to various posts play out.

Yes. I'll be nice to them unless they do something really rotten. I
wonder if the admin at the web forum will censor replies from alt.yoga..
That wouldn't be nice to their members.

I've been reading some more at that weight loss site.. It turns out that
some of the messages I replied to here on alt.yoga were posted on that
site more than six months ago.

I no longer believe I'll get any answers.

its weird. I noticed they had the same basic email address.

Then look at this message from Tue, 19 Jul 2005 for example:

By George (I mean Stu) I beleive you are correct! I took a few quotes
from the rash of postings and did Google searchs and they all to me to
that yoga forum. How in the world did you figure out or think to look
for previous posting? Quite brilliant, really.

Well the plot thickens...

Who is it and why? Could it be a disgruntlled former alt.yoga member
bent on revenge. Or a reincarnated mystic swami, mandated to bring yoga
chat back to the basics? There's always that good old standby, the
butler. Perhaps it was he. Hmmm

On the other perhaps you are to young :-)

CLUE: A popular board game circa 60s.

I would place most persons with a "joking level" awareness of this game
in the 45 years and up crowd. Although it might not be totally lost to
younger people. Somehow, I just don't get the impression they are
hanging out in alt.yoga.

Oh man. Maybe that's why I don't see any yuggins around alt.yoga:
because I'm it :-)

"This is the opening line from The Shadow, a popular radio program
which ran through the 1930's and 1940's. This suspense thriller lasted
for about twenty years and became one of the longest running radio
serials ever."

OBTW, I asked in another thread if you were using another nic. Or do we
have another Dave participating, who opens his notes with "howdy".
