People should state the real aim of meditation. Why do they carry it!!!

I just like to know! If they really know the reason doing it...

Where is it written that we all have to do it for the same reason? Yogic
meditation has many benefits, including stress reduction. For most
people, I would say that the immediate goal is the quieting of the mind
(yogascittavrittinirodham). Obviously, there are goals beyond that for
many practitioners, which is why Patanjali kept writing. Not everyone is
in it for the further goals, and that is their business, I would say.

Puma,

I like your question and I think you are funny :-)

If we hope to have a profitable exchange of information/opinion then it
might help to define the terms we are using so that we are all on the
"same page" so to speak.

Meditation can refer to an amazing number of activities. Just off the
top of my head.

Meditation can refer to:
contemplation
reflection
thought
study
deliberation
visualization
mental clearing
concentration
etc.

Some of the many, many types of meditation might be:
Zen
Kriya
Transcendental
Yoga
Tantric
Tibetan
Taoist
Buddhist
Christian
Islamic
etc.

Specific techniques may be classified as active or passive, with seed
or without seed, external or internal, etc. The use of a meditation may
be for marshal, religious, health and other reasons.

So would you be so kind as to clarify your inquiry so I can respond
sensibly?

Who is the "who" you are referring to?
What is the meditation that they may or may not know the aim of, or
what they are doing with it? And what is your purpose in asking the
question ;-)

It was implied in "the immediate goal is the quieting of the mind" and
" there are goals beyond that for many practitioners".

All this talk of goals is illusionary.

Howdy Puma!

In my case it is exploration.

I discovered a vast new dimension within myself at the milky lake and, as of
now, it's pretty much unexplored inner-space.

At this point even getting there again is a major success.

re: "even getting there again" I am referring to Samadhi. (Just thought that
I should be explicit!)

Jared,

I am funny and you are brilliant. The reason that i am asking this
question to understand what other people are referring when they talk
about meditation. To understand their standing... If we know others
standing,it becomes easier to talk with them. Because in these groups
there are some people saying that` if one mediates 21 days by saying
such such gullibals then he will visit them in his etheric bodies..
And he will teach others 4 yogas...

As you have asked let me put my understanding about meditation,it has 3
stages as known, DHARANA ,DHYANA,SAMADHI

Dharana like taking a picture static,DHYANA there are movement in this
picture about the OBJECT,SAMADHI meditator becomes the OBJECT ITSELF.
IF these three are together one is in the SAMYAMA and continiously gets
nformation regarding this OBJECT.

So to me meditation`s primary aim is to collect information regarding
that OBJECT. Although all the other benefits start to rain but all of
them have a secondary share on this effair.

With compassion,

Puma

Howdy Puma!

Then again... there are different kinds of samadhi:
Savikalpa-samadhi
Nirvikalpa-samadhi.

Based on the Ananda Sutram descriptions, I THINK that I experienced
Savikalpa-samadhi (savitarka.)

I'm not quite sure what the difference is between "determinate absorbtion"
and "indeterminate absorbtion."

the aim is to be free from the deep, wrenching angst of suffering
in our heart.

any way you can.

traditionally there are two ways to get there. the first is the
spontaneous awakening that happens on hearing, reading etc.,
that i am more than the suffering self. suffering has causes
and effects. ego is the memory of the ignorance.

"now i have transcended ego and suffering",
"now i am free",
"now i am the love that is flowing to all",
"now i let things be",
"now i understand the ego is not to be feared"
the causeless convictions arise in the yogi.

the other is the path of samadhi, mind training and so on.
then samadhi itself has to be transcended.

For me meditation is trying to still the constant thoughts of false
reality by relaxing the breath, body and soul. So basically (I am not
diferentiating between religions) meditation is getting into a position
and breath the stillnes in you. DOing is basically also doing
meditation, cause you are aware of your breath and still the mind. But
the best thing is to sit totally still after a yoga session. Lie down
or sit.
