I meant that putting them in jail keeps them from
committing the crimes while they are there, It
obviously wasn't clear and also so apparent that
it probably wasn't worth mentioning.

:
: No, I do not. People who commit crimes are not demotivated by the
prospect
: of negative consequences, such as prison. Indeed, most criminals didn't
: consider the possibility of getting caught and punished at all. When you
do
: punish them by sending them to prison, they don't seem to be especially
: demotivated either.
:
: According to the US Dept. of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics, half of
: all sexual offenders are re-incarcerated for a similar crime in a little
: over two years. For other crimes the recidivism rate is even worse.
Prison
: does not cure people of criminal behavior.

:
: The miracle of forgiveness in Christian thought involves both forgiving
and
: being forgiven. The sinner and the sinned against have their own ways of
: avoiding forgiveness.

:
: We cannot protect everyone from the mere possibility of harm. No religion
: has a miracle for that.
:
: It's a very difficult problem, weighing the protection of the innocent
: against the hope of redemption for the wicked. People err on both sides,
it
: seems. I certainly don't claim to have the answer.

:
: Lots of people with profound mental illnesses are judged sane and sent to
: prison. Sanity has little to do with mental illness, actually.

: You're welcome. Any time.
