Yog guru 'threatened' by SIMI

Renowned Yog guru Swami Ramdev has claimed that he has
been threatened by the banned Students Islamic Movement
of India (SIMI). "I have received an e-mail asking me to
restrain myself from teaching Yog to Muslims," Swami
Ramdev said on Sunday in the Capital at a well-attended
Press briefing, a day prior to the start of his seven-day
Yog camp in the city.
"Everything in this country is sought to be communally
treated by a handful of people," Swami Ramdev said,
clarifying that the Yog he teaches, is not for dharmantar
(religious conversion) but for roopantar (attitudinal
change).
In the e-mail addressed to the renowned exponent of
pranayam (deep breathing exercise), the banned Muslim
fundamentalist organisation SIMI, which claims to be
"Laden ke waris" (heirs to Osama bin Laden), issued a
warning that Yog is to be taught to Hindus alone and not
Muslims and that he (Swamiji) must not teach Yog to
Muslims or else they will cause untold damages to his
institutions, in particular a newly-built Ayurvedic
hospital in Haridwar (UP).
Before being banned in September 2001 under the Unlawful
Activities (Prevention) Act, the shadowy SIMI claimed
20,000 members across India. The ban order came a little
over two weeks following the September 11 attacks in the
United States of America.
Hundreds of its members, including its president Shahid
Badr Falahi, were arrested from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh,
Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Kerala,
Tamil Nadu and West Bengal during a nationwide swoop
following the ban.
The group was later added to the list of organisations
outlawed under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, the tough
anti-terror law passed by a joint session of Parliament
in March 2002. Falahi is currently being held in Delhi's
Tihar Jail and SIMI, it is believed no longer has the
extensive network across the country that it once had.
With the recent surfacing of fresh threats issued by the
outlawed SIMI, fears are being expressed whether a
dedicated core group of its cadres remains available to
be used by terror groups for furthering their plans in
the country.
But Swami Ramdev, who has earned international repute for
promoting Yog as a therauptic science is flummoxed by
these threats. He said, "in my teachings I have never
preached religion. Though I stress upon spirituality, it
is required so much to enable 'aatm-chintan' (self-
introspection)."
But Swamiji admits, he has learnt to cope with threats.
Said he, "I am not liked by the West for I do not approve
of their mindset. I am opposed to cola drinks, and such
byproducts of western culture, due to which multi-
national companies treat me as their enemy. Ever since, I
promoted Yog as a cure for all diseases, people have
reduced intake of medicines, owing which the
pharmaceutical companies are targeting me for the drop in
drugs sale."
With modern medicine's limiting influence in providing a
lasting relief from disease, traditional Yog according to
Swami Ramdev, is to be promoted as a "complete medical
science" than just an exercise for the body.
