| Hi Jazzy,
Regret to inform you that your mistake is referring into a dictionary
regarding REBIRTH and REINCARNATION...
If dictionaries were satisfactory there would be no need for DHARMA and
the SUTTAS...
So the real meaning of a soul, a belief that an continous personal
identity which goes from one body to the other... This can be shown in
HINDUISM...
But REBIRTH is not a personal reality.. It is the passage of karmas to
other carmas... When NIRVANA is reached, then this will be ended...
This is the
idea seen in BUDHISM...
So there is a vast difference between Reincarnation and Rebirth...
For reincarnation one needs to have a SOUL..But for rebirth only karmas
are necessary..
In REBIRTH , as ANATTA (NO SOUL) principle is accepted (in
Buddhism),rebirth is not a personal continuation ,it is only
transferring of karmas..
As a matter of fact in Buddhism nothing persists for long..Everything
is transitory. So soul is permenant identity, but Buddhism denies any
permenant feature....Actually if these two terms were same then
Buddhism would be same with Hinduism. The main difference lies in
Reincarnation and Rebirth...Also some other important suttas as PRAJNA
PARAMITA SUTTA...
So definition of these terms not merely words, can be found in their
religious realities.
With compassion,
Puma
