Where do we come from?

thinking "So what happened BEFORE the big bang?"
How do the great sages of Yogic science say everything began?

| Hi Paul,
You are not alone on this thought of yours...Waht I see is a closed
loop,it is like a circle or so.On such a loop no one can find any
beginning and end!!If we know where we are going, then this gives us a
clue also..
But as to the YOGIC view PRACRITY and so many Gods can be the cause...
Stories are many...But there is some evidence that there is no
beginning nor ending...Just getting the sape of difference...
What is your personal view? For me personal views are important...

people answer it. Oh well, I might as well start. I come from New York.

| Howdy!
Home is where I hang my hat!
If you go along with the expansion of the universe, then we come from the
big bang.
Only thing is... since the process is a cycle:
Big bang,
Universe expands,
Universe contracts,
Another big bang...
There's no telling how many times this has happened before.
There is also the matter of perspective:
Are you a monotheist?
Do you believe in reincarnation?
Do you think that the earth is the only place in the universe where life
exists?
There are probably just about as many answers as there are people who ask
the question!

Are you presupposing the fleshy physical universe is place of our origins?
And doesn't this presupposition suggest that there needs to be a time
and place beyond the here and now?

There are a number of creation myths traced back to vedic texts. The
one I am most familiar with is this one. I believe it is used by
modern Hindus and Buddhists alike.
> This universe existed in the shape of darkness, unperceived, destitute
> of distinctive marks, unattainable by reasoning, unknowable, wholly
> immersed, as it were, in deep sleep.
> Then the Divine Self-existent, himself indiscernible but making all
> this, the great elements and the rest, discernible, appeared with
> irresistible power, dispelling the darkness.
> He who can be perceived by the internal organ alone, who is subtle,
> indiscernible, and eternal, who contains all created beings and is
> inconceivable, shone forth of his own will.
> He, desiring to produce beings of many kinds from his own body, first
> with a thought created the waters, and placed his seed in them.
> That seed became a golden egg, in brilliancy equal to the sun; in that
> egg he himself was born as Brahma, the progenitor of the whole world....
> The Divine One resided in that egg during a whole year, then he himself
> by his thought divided it into two halves;
> And out of those two halves he formed heaven and earth, between them
> the middle sphere, the eight points of the horizon, and the eternal
> abode of the waters.
> From himself he also drew forth the mind, which is both real and
> unreal, likewise from the mind ego, which possesses the function of
> self-consciousness and is lordly.
> Moreover, the great one, the soul, and all products affected by the
> three qualities, and, in their order, the five organs which perceive
> the objects of sensation.
> But, joining minute particles even of those six, which possess
> measureless power, with particles of himself, he created all beings.
The idea of God creating something is completely foreign to the East.
Brahma/god transcends the world of action. The idea that nature is
"created" is absurd. Humans made from clay, or other such absurdities
makes no sense. Humans can create artifacts out of wood, metal or
whatever. But God is non-dual. Creation is only possible in the world
of duality. Creation only exists in opposition to destruction.
Thus "nature" as an artifact is purely a Western invention. Given that
we and our surroundings are all forms in a natural flow (the Tao)
"nature" itself is not translatable into Chinese or Sanscrit. The
closest word would be that for spontaneity. The above text does not
really capture this important aspect to the Eastern creation myth.
Given this transcendental form of God, the myth makes sense as the
beginings of the world we know commences with a split. And the
non-dual becomes dual, while retaining its non-dual nature.
As for the Big Bang theory. It is interesting speculation but it is so
far from being resolved that it carries no real philosophical weight.
Physics is a science limited in scope to measuring the physical world.
It makes predictions based on finding mathematical principals of
physical governance. But this physical realm is but a small part of
human experience. For example take the intellectual realm mathematics
exists in. Here is a realm of concepts and formulae that are not
subject to gravitational pull or atomic measurement. Where does "Force
= Mass x Acceleration" or "E=mc(2)" reside? It may be a description of
a physical phenomenon but its conceptual nature lies in a realm outside
the gross limitations of the physical universe.
So here we have a description of two distinct realms of human
experience, the physical and the intellectual. I with the help of St.
Bonaventura would like to submit a third realm. The contemplative
realm. This is the sphere opened by yogic practice - we catch glimpses
of this realm in our non-dual "experiences" (experience is in quotes
because these happen without the help of the five senses).
In summing - The western creationist myths make an error by insulting
god as a limited being engaged in creation. The Eastern myths describe
a poetic answer servicable to answer the questions of children. And
the "The Big Bang" myth is a form of monism that worships the material
without recognizing the intellectual and spritual realms.
So, where do we come from?
This is a distraction from the real question, "Where are we here and now?".

Howdy Paul!
As I understand it (I may be wrong)...
First came Brahman,
Then came awareness within Brahman,
Then the awareness created Maya,
Then awareness created the rest of the universe out of Brahman within the
framework of maya.

My understanding of the big bang is that time and space are generated
out of the singularity. There is no notion of *before* time. How
could there be? And its silly to imagine darkness *before* the event.
Given there was no *before* connected to the big bang. Don't get me
started on our misconceptions of the notion of causality.
All this big bang theory is rather recent speculation by physicists.
We are far from a truly cohesive theory about the origins of the
physical universe. And I still question how one makes a leap from the
*origins of the physical universe* to the origins of us as conscious
beings.
What is the physical universe without our perception of it?

Exactly, this is the bit that has always troubled me with either the big
bang or creation ideas; what was going on for eternity beforehand? Therefore
it's not "really" a beginning
I cyclical universe seems more logical, but then the same question
appears....where did that start? Aaaarrrhhhhh! I guess I can't conceive
infinity.

I think there is plenty of evidence to make a that leap. Evolution seems
unquestionable to me. Whether it is the evolution of gas into liquid into
rock, or monkeys into man. We can see from animal and plant remains how
species have evolved and adapted over time. I can comfortably wrap my head
round the idea that earth was a boiling cauldron that cooled and produced
single celled blobs that evolved into humans. What I can not rationalise is
any theory that has been put forward as a "beginning".
So maybe there is a reason for that, like you said, I am asking the wrong
question. But as my both work and my nature forces me to question and
interrogate, that fact really pisses me off!

I really don't know. I do believe Darwin was right about evolution. But that
only explains what happened once life began. I want to know what happened
before that and no theory I have ever heard does. I guess that's one of the
main reason I am agnostic.

That is exactly correct. Brahman is both non-dual and dual. That is a
feature of non-duality. Sort of a 2 for 1 deal.
Brahman is not the relative
Brahman is not the Absolute
Brahman is not both the relative and the Absolute
Brahman is not neither the relative nor the Absolute=20

Time is a perception we have of the physical world. It is something we
force on the universe to make sense of it. In fact if we did not have
memories we would not have a concept of time. There are psychological
studies of people why have had damage to the areas of the brain that
affect memory. They live every moment as if it is new. Time does not
exist for them.
Without our perception of the world in time there is no such thing as
time. In such a world the concept of *before hand* is absurd.
According to Stephan Hawking the "big bang" theory is a bit of a
misnomer. The expansion of the universe would not have made a sound.
The singularity is the fabric of space and time. There is no before
it. And as far as I have read there is nothing to suggest a loop.
>
> I cyclical universe seems more logical, but then the same question

This idea that things need a start is an illusion based on social bias.
Western language itself is structured in such a way that everything
has a beginning middle and end. This structure basis the design of our
consciousness. Going back to Plato we have a history of seaching for
first principals. For the ancient Greeks the concept that there was no
telos to the universe was nonsense to them.
Judeo-xtianity picked up on this and has held it dear up to this day.
Finding meaning is a proprity in the west.
But in the East this is very different. Sanscrit is not limited
structure this way. An Indian child would never think to ask, "how was
I made?"
Instead we have the cosmos as a dance or a drama (maya). And like a
dance we do not do it to get from place A to place B. We dance to
dance. We go in circles, we are caught up in the music, we enjoy the
moment. A dance does not have a meaning. There is no telos.
In this way the cosmic dance of the universe is meaningless. But this
does not mean our lives are meaningless. It just means at the heart
of the universe is a spontaneous flow of actions, and we are part of
that.
Until we decide to subdue action.
That is the yoga part.

With the genetic evidence these days evolution has gone beyond being a
theory.

Alan Watts puts it this way, So let's say the tree which grows apples
is a tree which apples, using 'apple' as a verb. And a world in which
human beings arrive is a world that peoples. Here we are on this pile
of rocks spinning around the sun. Be very careful when you look at a
pile of rocks because at any moment it may become alive.

Questions are good. Yoga for us in the west is going to question our
most basic assumptions about the nature of human nature.

I think they go by ordinary science whenever practical. Aside from that,
there's turtles all the way down. ;-)
As for me, by an incredibly difficult act of self-discipline I avoid
speculation on things I couldn't understand anyway.

| Greetings,
For the sole purpose of "debatableness", lets introduce three "concepts",
which, by themselves, are irrelevant.
They serve merely the purpose of a "basis", like a base of a lamp, for what
really is to be debated...the "lamp"
Therefore, like "base" and "lamp" let us concentrate on "lamp" rather than
the "base"
So :

| This reminds me of something I heard from a friend. Apparently the
Buddhist view of the origins of the universe is in 2 steps.
1 In the beginning, there was nothing
2 And then it was gone.
This may sound funny, but it does fit into what others have been saying
on this thread, viz, what we think we see is a product of our
imagination. After Brahman created her, Maya is the only reality.

| Well "emptiness" and "nothing" are not the same, in the context of that e.g.
Lets try a diferent approach.
Lets take another e.g.:
Look at your keyboard:
Look at the "Home" and "End" keys;
Let's Create a Universe :
Click "New Post"
"Before" you type anything,
If you hit the "Home" key, it will send your cursor to the same position as
hitting the "End" key will take;
Start typing; that is, creating your physical universe (for this e.g. a
newsgroup message),
Stop...
Ok, so :
Hitting the "Home" key will now take your cursor to that same point where
"Before", both "Home" and "End" were;
BUT,
Hitting the "End" key, will now take your cursor to "After" your just
created "physical universe" (the newsgroup message you just typed).
Of course,
Someone can say,
"Well, if I don't type in any words, then hitting the "Home" and "End" keys
will always return me to the same position, therefore, they
can never exist seperately, so they are the same".
The answer?
What about if you hit the "Spacebar" key (a few times)?
Does that not create "something", which is "empty"?
Which is "something" (as oposed to the "physical universe"; "+"; "matter";
etc...etc..),
But,
Not the same "something" you have when you hit the "alpha-numeric" keys?
So to your sense organ(s), your physical universe is "empty".
But,
Does that mean it is non-existent?
To the computer that same "emptiness" is in fact existent, for it has,
for e.g., ten "empty spaces", as a result of the "spacebar" key having been
hit ten times (for e.g.).
"There's more than meets the eye"
