Vision - Entropion

Yesterday I had eyelid surgery to correct entropion. Afterwards they gave me
some eye compresses which they told me to use several times a day for the next
few days. They also gave me ointment for the eyelid.

My problem regards the eye compresses which are a jelly-like substance which
fits the eyes very nicely. However they came in a sealed plastic container
which stated that they were sterile until the package was opened. The nurse
opened the package and took the things out and showed them to me then put them
back in. Then of course they were no longer sterile.

I used them as compresses and blood from my sutures stained them. I washed them
with soap and water and the bloodstains are still there. I soaked them in
hydrogen peroxide and the stains are still there and they now have little
bubbles on them which go away when they dry out.

They are labeled as Swiss Therapy Transdermal Eye Mask.

They are very comfortable and are effective in reducing the swelling. But I
wonder about using them because the ointment gets all over them and I don't know
whether they are appropriate to use.

Does anyone have any advice?

Since they are part of your doctor ordered post surgical instructions,
please DO NOT DISCONTINUE use based on any answer you get from an Internet
group. If you are concerned about the stains from blood and ointment call
your doctor's office and ask for advice.

I called the doctor's office and they said they don't know. They didn't
actually instruct me to use them, a nurse at the surgery center gave them to me
and told me to use them as compresses for several days.

I emailed the supplier and was told that they had no instructions and that I had
probably done the right thing by washing them in soap and water.

So, the doctor doesn't know, the supplier doesn't know and you don't know. I
did get information from the supplier that they are made of hydrogel so I looked
up that on the internet.

It appears that the stuff is for one time use only but can be washed and re-used
for up to 7 days.

Hydrogel absorbs liquids and exudates from wounds. I hope it doesn't transfer
the stuff back to the skin.
