MRI of knee - closed vs open

| For an MRI of the knee does it really matter if it's a closed or open
MRI? I've heard the closed do a better job but if it doesn't matter
than I'd prefer the open. Who wouldn't?

| Closed MRI units offer higher field strength which results in
better image quality and faster acquisitions. For extremety imaging
though, the difference in image quality between open and
closed units probably isn't terribly significant.
If being in enclosed spaces is a problem for you, the techs
can probably slide you into a closed unit feet first and leave
your head out in the open (or mostly outside).

| For most routine evaluations of the knee, the open should be adequate.
If you can tolerate the closed, it would be better in some cases.
You might also be able to find a site with an extremity magnet, where
only your knee was in the machine.
If you feel you can tolerate the closed machine, I would go for it. You
can often go and visit the center where you will have the scan and get
in the machine for a moment to see if you can tolerate it.

| It really doesn't matter for a MRI of the knee, also for other small
joints (e.g. wrist, ankle). Closed (that means high-field) machines are
good for exams which need to be really fast and that are more complex
(e.g.
liver).

| Saw my orthopedist yesterday. He told me to promise him I'd have a
closed MRI. So that's what I'll do. The place near me told me my head
would not be in and that sounded fine to me.
I've had two closed MRIs of my back. No fun but I didn't freak out.
