Author sterilizing soil

Hi everyone,

I am trying to set up an experiment in which I need to sterilize soil
with gamma radiation. To do this I need to deliver a dose of 1 MRad to
24g of soil which are contained in a 160ml serum bottle. I'm located
at Michigan State University, which has a Cobalt-60 source, but it is
so old that it would take me forever to sterilize my soil. Does anyone
know of another facility where I could irradiate my soils?

Thanks so much,
Kristin

Several years back they were building a facility in the Tampa FL area
to use for sterilization of food products for long life storage.
Perhaps there are similar places in your area that would be willing to
help.
BTW, there was such a backlash about irradiated food that I am not
even sure they went ahead with the project. I am pretty sure the site
was going to be in Plant City which is in Hillsborough County,
Florida. That would put it just east of Tampa proper.
