Do I Need A Vascular Radiologist?
|

|
| Hi,
Sorry to ask a stupid question, but I want to make sure I have my facts
in order.
Last week, I had a physical and my doctor looked at some Varicose veins
I have in one calf. They are not only ugly, I am having some paid in
that calf and the ankle on the same leg and the doctor said it is
possible this issue is more than cosmetic and the veins could indeed be
the source of the discomfort.
He said, I believe, that I should seek out a Vascular Radiologist who
would use a procedure to close off these veins and get rid of them. I
have move a distance from this doctor's office, so he didn't happen to
know a doctor in my new area, but said he would write down the type of
doctor I needed as I left.
Well, I got busy paying and I didn't realize until after I left he had
forgotten to write down the name. He is now on vacation and I would
feel foolish looking for a "Vascular Radiologist" if that was not what
he said.
As silly as it may see, is a "Vascular Radiologist" what he most likely
was referring to?

| The appropriate term is usually "Interventional Radiologist" although
some call themselves vascular radiologists. They offer terrific
minimally invasive options to surgery to treat varicose veins in
appropriately selected patients. The Society of Interventional
Radiology may be able to help you find someone in your area. Their
website is www.sirweb.org The procedure you're looking into uses the
Endovenous Laser System (ELVS) by a company called Angiodynamics.
There are other companies that have devices that do the same thing.
The generic name for the varicose vein procedure is "venous ablation"
I hope this helps you, good luck,
Ken
