Pardon me if I ask if this might be a troll? Either that or you have not
been monitoring this group very long. PVP (Photo-Selective Vaporization
of the Prostate) being what seems to be the prime subject of his newsgroup
and the "gold standard" treatment for BPH.

Rich256, in my opinion, both of your statement are false and outright
misleading.
sci.med.prostate.bph is a newsgroup about and for the discussion of
ANYTHING related to the subject prostate.bph.
Just because the group was/is hijacked and peppered by someone with a
commercial interest in the marketing of PVP, it is nor was, as you claim,
intended to be the "prime subject" of his newsgroup.
Your other claim that "Photo-Selective Vaporisation of the Prostate is the
"gold standard" treatment for BPH" is wishful thinking at its best and
statistically very wrong. I hazard to guess that more than 85% of all
operations for BPH are still not performed via PVP but rather by
conventional method. It therefore puzzles me how you can claim that PVP is
the "gold standard"?
Do you have any association with Laserscope?

No, but just pointing out that it seems to me that so many posts here
reference PVP that I felt that anyone asking what it was must not have been
here very long. Until I got here a couple months ago I had never heard of
it. After investigating I cancelled my appointments with my URO because
their group did not do PVP and wanted to do the old Roto-rooter (TURP), and
switched to one who did PVP. He no longer does TURP and says that all UROs
will eventually switch. I may have made a little mistake, he talked me
into doing TUMT first as it is less invasive and PVP can always be done
later. However, at week 2 I am seeing results so it may not have been a
mistake. He did tell me that of the 500 TUMT he has done, 80% said they
would do it again but only 2 individuals said they would never do it again.
As others here have said, TUMT is a more painful procedure (you are fully
awake) and it takes weeks to see results whereas PVP is immediate.
This is what a friend told me:
<SNIP>
This is what I don't like about TURP:
"TURP is an invasive surgical procedure. There is a greater risk of
complications, including excessive blood loss, blood transfusion,
incontinence, impotence, infection, painful urination and a high rate of
retrograde ejaculation. TURP requires a 1-4 day hospital stay and 1-3 days
wearing a catheter. Recovery time averages 4-6 weeks."
Although it's still invasive, this is what I do like about PVP:
"Most patients return home a few short hours after the procedure and can
return to normal, non-strenuous activities within days.
<SNIP>
Of course the advantage of TUMT is that you can resume normal activities
immediately but the problem might be worse for a few days.
As for being "gold standard" I am only repeating what was posted by some
that had it recently. It was in response to someone's URO having said that
TURP was gold standard.
I was just surprised that anyone watching this group would ask what it was.
For example taking a look at the Subject matters of threads for the past
month I find:
