Scoping the bladder? PAIN?
|
|
|
| It has been decided by a new Uro that I have that he would like to
scope the bladder for various reasons. I previously had this done in
a hospital and was 'out' for the procdure. My current Doc choses to
do it in his office.
My question is: how painful is this procdure ? How long does it
normally take ? I am a "chicken" and don't much like pain.
Should I insist on being 'put under', or is it not a big deal. I can
self catherize with no problem, btw.
Thanks ! ! !

| Don't know your threshold for pain. I didn't think I had any pain at all.
Just couldn't get my mind around something being shoved up my pecker. My
Uro used a topical anesthetic, maybe Zylocain?? up the channel, then in
went the scope. Not sure if the Zylocain had enough time to work and it if
might have a been a touch less uncomfortable if he had waited about 5 min
before shoving his scope in. Then sit back and focus your mind hard on a
sunny day at the beach to consciously relax the channel as much as possible.
It only took about 10 minutes for the entire procedure...not long at all.
Best of luck to you.

| My uro's nurse injected the lydocain and said it needed 15 min to work. The
actual exam took only minute or two and there was one moment of intense pain
("that usually gets their attention" the doc said as I gasped). That was
the easy part. Peeing razor blades for the next 36 hours was much worse
than the actual exam. I doubt that they would put you under for this type
of procedure.

| I've had a couple of cystoscopies that checked out the prostate and at least
some of the bladder and I didn't find them uncomfortable at all. The only
sensation is when the tube passes thru the prostate and that wasn't a big
deal. I'm not a big fan of pain either but this was a piece of cake. Jim

| Will he use a flexible fiber optic? If so, it may not be too uncomfortable.
A rigid instrument is more likely to be very uncomfortable.

| I have had three in-office scoping experiences. All three times they
pushed a lidocaine gel down the pipe. I am a chronic pain sufferer so
I am very sensitive to pain. I never really felt any pain just some
discomfort. I had some burning afterwards but they gave me something
for that.
