Iron loading: a risk factor for osteoporosis.

Weinberg ED.

University, Bloomington, IN, 47405, USA, eweinber@indiana.edu.

Iron loaded persons are at increased risk for infection, neoplasia,
arthropathy, cardiomyopathy and an array of endocrine and
neurodegenerative diseases. This report summarizes evidence of
increased risk of iron loading for osteoporosis. Iron suppresses bone
remodeling apparently by decreasing osteoblast formation and new bone
synthesis. Low molecular mass iron chelators as well as a natural
protein iron chelator, lactoferrin, may be useful in prevention of
osteoporosis.

"See the date of his .. submission .. ?"

Yes, a look at the full article, always a good idea, shows it a routine
review of literature type article with the first date used of 1984. The
article mentions the many reasons iron overload may occur. Too bad
copyright prevents posting the full article, it would be a case of "read
it and weep" for claimants to any exclusive insight and to any claiming
black and white answers to complex questions.
