Everybody should be made aware of Hereditary Hemachromatosis (HH, an
Iron overload disease) and the fact that, contrary to what many doctors
were taught in medical school, it is one of the most common hereditary
diseases, and, untreated, it is fatal. It effects as many as 8 in every
1000 people and millions carry the genes (as many as 1 in 8)! Treated
early enough, the patients live a normal lifespan. The early symptoms
are often vague, and passed off by doctors as nothing serious. The
treatment involved removing blood
at regular intervals to reduce iron stores. Screening should probably
begin in childhood!
