Author using hands aggravates upper/mid-back pain

Hello,
I just wanted to gather input from this forum.

Mom is in her mid-50s and has upper/mid-back
pain for several years now.

The pain appears to be caused when doing
work that involves using her hands. Stirring
foods over many minutes, lifting pots, etc.
seems to aggravate her condition.

Occasionally if too much work is done with
hands, she gets pain below breastbone.

How could hand usage be related to upper/mid-back
pain?

She doesn't suffer any back pain when walking or
sitting.

Please advice.

Thanks
Cyli

Nerves for the limbs all channel through the spine. Many muscles of
the back are also in minor use when the hands are in motion. She
should see a good doctor about it.

Absolutely true! The upper spine houses the nerve roots for the neck,
shoulders, arms and hands. Could very well be something in the cervical
spine.

In addition to what you were already told, she is using her
back muscles - if she is standing and holding something
heavy in front of her she is using her back muscles to keep
from falling over forwards. If she is stirring something
thick, when she moves the spoon/spatula/whatever towards
her, she is using her back muscles (again, to keep from
falling over forwards).

If this is what is causing her pain, she should start doing
exercises to strengthen her muscles.

How long does it take for the pain to appear? To go away?
Does heating the area help it?
