JANUARY 10 , 2006
As anyone who tuned into the Alito Hearings today well knows, now, they will be
a grand show of nuanced, political theatre- trust the republicans to bait the
democrats at every chance, be sure that everyone giving pro-Alito testimony to
camp it up, and give a lot of zingers, and expect, for a change, blanket
coverage from the corporate media.
Now to be sure, we should all pay close attention to this hearing. It is clear
from the buzz going around the rapture-right christians, and their toadies in
congress, that Alito will deliver the long-awaited 5-4 decision that will
overturn Roe V Wade, should he be confirmed. Thus, the battle is joined to
re-capture those errant sheep who have strayed from the doctrinaire Bush Base,
and, as a side bonus. bring an overwhelming pro-corporate majority to the high
court that will exist well into the latter half of this century.
However, the certain showy nature of these hearings will serve yet another
purpose:
In days in which the Republican party in general, and the White House in
particular, is sinking into ever-widening and deepening pits of scandal, the
spinsters at the white house have siezed upon the upcoming hearings as a prime
opportunity to muddy the waters, and draw attention from things like domestic
spying, the Abramoff Scandal, Tom DeLay, an increasingly bloody situation on the
ground in Iraq, an anemic economy, rising unemployment- you know- the usual
suspects.
In the coming days, I wearilly predict, we will be reminded that the corporate
media is patently incapable (with a few sterling examples), of chewing gum and
walking at the same time (IE- it chooses to cover one major story, at a time.)
While before, it was Michael Jackson keeping the Downing Street Memo off the
air, now, we will see the slightly more newsworthy Alito being used to distract
an ever-fickle public from issues every bit as pressing.
THE FUTURE JUST AIN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE.
Now- it's a given that Bush is the creature of the rapture right. He has shown
time and time again that he refuses to be overtly beholden to them, but they
know that he knows that he'd be nowhere without them. He owes his presidency to
them- they are his most dedicated base, and make up the better part of the
shrinking minority that still support him.
In keeping up with the info available on the internet, I've always made pains to
spend a better part of my time, checking out what these folks have to say.
Side note: It is Important- VITALLY important, for media watchers to spend a
goodly portion of their days monitoring news from "the other side." Liberals who
listen only to Air America have no better perspective than those Conservatives
who only watch Fox "News."
It takes a while to get into their heads, and when you do, you glimpse a totally
different perspective on history:
Once upon a time, America was a "Godly Nation." They never tie down exactly when
we ceased being a "Godly Nation", but they give clues. It was sometime in the
mid-century, before things like integration, civil rights legislation, women's
liberation, the sexual revolution, the general acceptance of gays in mainstream
society, and emissions controls came along.
It was a pristine, black-and-white world, in which all women stayed in the home,
to raise children, while every man in america went out in their sunday best
every workday at 6:00 AM to an unspecified job that would pay for a post-war
boom Levittown two-story. Blacks had their own side of town, and gays- well,
they didn't exist.
At least, that's what they seem to believe it was. To point out the absurdity of
this vision is a waste of time.
But there you have America, in this bygone "Godly Era" (which seems to have
existed in the early 50's.) And so it was, in those days, when there were giants
in the earth.
But then, Washington Bureaucrats, at the behest of an east-coast elite,
instituted grand plans of "social engineering."
The 60's were the result- and we all know how nasty THAT was- alla that "Peace
and Love" crap? Voting rights legislation passed? Massive civil action to end an
unpopular and bloody war? Women being given control over their reproductive
rights? Genuine questioning of the powers that be?
God- it makes one wanna vomit...
All of these things, and many more, were the result of a concerted effort by
pointy-headed ivy-league intelligentsia which had nothing more than the total
destruction of america's moral fiber as their stated and planned goal.
This degeneracy continued until the ascension of Ronald Reagan, in the 1980
election. Now, not to give Reagan any undue attention, but he must be mentioned,
here, because to the rapture right, he's a saint- a mix between James Dean
(minus the gay), Abraham Lincoln (minus the preogressive nature), and Jesus
himself (minus the jew.) During his tenure, he fought the "social engineering"
experiments of "Environmental protection", "Welfare", and "Social programs", and
while he lost more times than he won, he only did so, because, apparently, the
archangel Gabriel came to him in a vision, and told him he could only win, by
sacrificing his place in heaven- thus, he foreswore earthly victory, for greater
rewards in heaven.
The latter part of the preceding paragraph is pure conjecture (and utter
bullshit), of course, but you get far more fantastic tales, when you listen to
the musings of Pat Robertson.
With the passing of the Sainted Reagan, the rapture right was brought low, with
the ascension of Bush the elder. They roiled with disgust during the presidency
of Clinton, and when they saw Gary Bauer collapse in the 2000 primaries, they
recoiled from the relatively centrist McCain, and fell lock-step, in full,
behind Bush.
Lee Atwater, who actively brought these voters under the republican tent while
calling them "extra-chromosome republicans" behind their backs might have spent
his last days living in remorse for what he had done, but he was dead, now, and
his protege- Karl Rove was there to bring them in, with open arms.
Now- the rapture right sees Bush as their man in charge. They occasionally stage
their "rebellion du jour" from time to time on doctrinal or political issues,
but always fall back in place, when it comes down to key issues. In the wake of
the Alito nomination, we have to consider, in stark and brutal terms, where
these people believe they must take this nation.
Now- I want to interrupt this narrative with a question: How did you imagine the
vast unknown, known as "the future"? If you're anything like me, you're thinking
about space stations in orbit, colonies on the moon, big-eared aliens who run
bars in space, and John Sheridan defending Babylon 5 against President Clark's
goons.
However, if you're more practical than me, you re thinking about the varying
challenges and opportunities that potential futures might bring. You're building
constructs of variables, such as population, technology, and economics, and, in
the midst of this ever-expanding matrix of complexity, trying to draw
conclusions from such, as to where we all will be, in the times to come- while
at the same time, balancing these hopes with the too-oft repeated mistakes of
history .
The future is infinutely mutable, it seems, when you view it, this way...
But not to Bush's base- not the rapture right- they have an agenda, and, well,
dang, but it's water-tight....
1: Fight for an illusory version of "Leave it to beaver" america to be somehow
imposed on an increasingly liberal-minded america, until:
2: The Rapture comes, all the faithful are called back to heaven, leaving those
not "left behind" to engage in an apocalyptic battle with the Antichrist (which,
of course, will be secretary-general of the United Nations), 144,000 jews wil
convert to christianty, after which:
3: Jesus will return, and the rest of the jews go to hell- that's all that's
important..
Oh- and the good, christian "saved" will live in an earthly garden of
tranquility, in eternal nano-communication with the one and only salvation of
mankind, Jesus Christ, forever.
Now- Considering I belong to a religion that holds as holy gospel that X-ist
beings were supposed to rescue all true descendents of the legendary Yeti like
myself in their pleasure saucers back in 1997, I'm loathe to pass judgement on
the beliefs of others...
But DANG- I would like to think that the future has more in store for us, than
just a bunch of wrath, thrown together by an obscure greek exile, over 2,000
years ago, coupled with modern-day paranoia...
Considering this dominionist futurescape of whitebread terror, I sorta long for
the dystopia of Blade Runner- yeah- it was dark and moody, but there were still
classic cars on the street, the bars were cool, and you could buy sushi on a
streetcorner bar (with noodles.) I'd even prefer Eraserhead, to where I see
things going, now.
And while we're at it- where's my rocket jetpack?
