I have been taking one or two capsules of this stuff for the past
year. I was supposedly infected with HCV twenty years ago, and it was
discovered five years ago. At the moment, I am not opting for
treatment, but I keep an open mind regarding alternatives and upcoming
promising advances. Over the last year, I have had my LFT (Liver
Function Tests) done about every other month. For the sixth time in a
row, my ALT levels have dropped, going slowly from 138 to 94. I know I
still have another 30 to go before it's considered to be in the normal
range, but the trend is encouraging nonetheless. Also, my AST levels,
which were only slightly elevated before, normalized over seven months
ago and continue to drop. I have read studies about the protective
benefits of Milk Thistle, but didn't think I'd see such ostensible
results. Has anyone else experienced similar results on LFTs while
taking Milk Thistle?

I admit I am biased, but there is a lot of info regarding peer reviewed
clinical testing at http://www.liversupport.com,
http://www.maximummilkthistle.com and http://www.ultrathistle.com.

The most impressive study may be from Journal of Clincal
Gastroenterology in October of 2003. See
http://www.liversupport.com/important.htm. It has to do with alcohol
induced hepatitis (not HCV) but it clearly shows dramatic liver cell
protection activity.

Bravo for you! Milk Thistle is an excellent liver herb. It protects,
regenerates and detoxifies the liver. It's an antioxidant for the liver.
It is an herbal builder and protector for the liver. I, myself, take Milk
Thistle for protecting and regenerating my liver. There are additional
herbs and juices that you can take for your liver. I am thinking of making
a list here for you, but I decided perhaps I'll keep this post brief. I am
a Holistic Health Practitioner. I shall recommend one excellent book for
you that may assist you, Natural Liver Therapy, by Christopher Hobbs, L.Ac.
Best wishes to you!

Regarding Milk Thistle, there are so many different brands and forms
(liquid, capsule, etc). Can anyone recommend a good brand that they
have had success with?

Actually, Lynn, I'd like to add to your question. What's the
difference between extract and concentrate? Either more effective than
the other?

If you look through the archives this NG, you might find some brand
names.
I believe the best kind of milk thistle is in liquid capsules form.
