| The religious right's fabricated "War on Christmas" took a turn from ridiculous
to offensive this week. On Monday, Concerned Women for America (CWFA)
spokesperson Robert Knight appeared on CNN and compared those who would replace
"Merry Christmas" with "Happy Holidays" to the Nazis!
As highlighted by People For the American Way (PFAW), Knight said, "You know,
when the Nazis moved into Austria in 1936 they immediately removed Christmas
from the schools... I think that ought to disturb people that we're moving
towards that kind of attitude in this country." (Watch Knight's rant on the PFAW
site.)
Knight's assertion is outrageous, and DefCon wants to let him know. We urge you
to email Beverly LaHaye, Robert Knight, and the rest of the gang at CWFA, to
tell them exactly how you feel about Knight's careless exaggeration.
A Flurry of Activity
While we wait for the decision in the historic Dover, PA intelligent design
trial to be announced, we're putting the final touches on a new campaign -- set
to launch early next year -- to support stem cell research.
We are also poised for more static from Catholic League president Bill Donohue
and Jerry Falwell over the urgent (sarcasm intended) Merry Christmas vs. Happy
Holidays debate.
As always, stay tuned to the blog for updates on all that is DefCon, and of
course, have a wonderful holiday season!
Happy Holidays...DefCon Style
Here's a holiday quiz: According to Catholic League president Bill Donohue, who
are "the worst elements in our culture"?
Corrupt Politicians? Mass murderers? No, it's those twisted and unethical forces
pushing the phrase "Happy Holidays."
That's right, Donohue was so offended that some might choose to send holiday
cards not adorned with "Merry Christmas," that he spent last week screaming to
the media. If you missed his rant on CNN, please read the transcript here.
Not to be dissuaded by a few angry religious right leaders, we've put together
the first official "DefCon Holiday Reading List," showcasing a number of great
books written by experts on the religious right and its influence.
These books go great with Season's Greetings cards of any variety, including but
not limited to Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas, and yes, even "Happy Holidays."
Check out the DefCon reading list to find the perfect gift for your friends and
family members, as well as for your own collection.
Intelligent Design vs. Evolution in Dover
In the next two weeks, we expect a decision in the historic Dover school board
trial. This decision will have a direct impact on science education for the
Pennsylvania district's students. It's no secret that the religious right is
hoping to use this decision as a precedent in other states, while we are hoping
the decision will devastate their assault on education.
Keep your fingers crossed, and check the DefCon blog for daily updates.

A New Year, a New Campaign
The religious right's support of intelligent design is not just about their
distaste for evolution. It's part of their larger war on science. Another front
in this war is their attack on medicine, most notably stem cells. The casualties
of this war include the millions of Americans who suffer from diseases that may
benefit from increased stem cell research, as well as our nation's global
scientific standing.
In the New Year, DefCon will be exposing this war on science, starting with
proposed stem cell legislation, set to hit the Senate floor in January. It's
time our politicians put the interests of our citizens over the agenda of the
religious right.
Stay tuned to www.DefConAmerica.org for information on this crucial campaign and
ways you can get involved.
As always, we are excited to have you as part of our team. We wish you a happy
and relaxing holiday season. Rest up! There is a lot to do in 2006.
