| I'm 50 and just diagnosed with colon liver cancer. I'm guessing I'll be dead in
maybe a year or so. In the past 6 months I dieted down from 250 pounds down to
200 pounds. When I realized I had health problems, I quit my diet, and got my
cancer diagnosis.
My question: as I now begin the process of living (dying) with cancer, should I
continue to diet down towards a "healthy" target weight of 160 pounds? Or,
should I instead leave my weight where it sits at 200 lbs and use that extra
fat which is on my frame as a buffer --anticipating that the cancer will eat me
up, and that remaining 40 pounds of fat will be very valuable in lengthening my
life as I enter the final illness of my life?

Welcome-
I am sorry to hear your diagnosis. It sounds as though you have a lot
of questions, and it would seem that your physician would be the best
person to direct them to. You may also try finding a cancer newsgroup
for people who are experiencing similar illnesses and issues.

I'm so sorry to hear about your new illness. I worked for an AIDS program
for several yrs & they always told people not to diet because it was good to
have a little extra weight because of the possibility of "wastiing" which
can also happen with cancer. I agree with the other poster that only your
doc would know the right course for you to take. There may be other
factors that you don't know about that would be helped by losing the weight.
