IRON AND HEART DISEASE
"Background and Purpose--Several studies have provided evidence for a
relationship between body iron load and cardiovascular disease. We
analyzed the association of [blood] ferritin [one of the chief forms
that iron is stored in the body] levels with [degeneration of the
arteries, atherosclerosis]...
"Results--... both men and women showed a dose-response relationship
[higher the levels the greater the occurrence] between [blood] ferritin
levels...[and the prevalence of plaques in the arteries of the head and
neck.]
Editor's note--the plaques would indicate heart disease may be
developing.
