| Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Steve Holmes, an RMN with a
real background in I.T.
Over the past years I have noticed how difficult it is to get free
assessment tools, articles and the like without having to pay, or
being bound by copyright issues.
Here is my proposal, I intend to set up a new web site, aimed
specifically at creating documents that are freely copyable and free
from restiction as well as assessment tools which can be distrubuted
at no cost and without hindrance. The only catch is that if you use
them you must make them available to others under the same conditions,
i.e. FREE for public, private, corporate usage, free to be copied and
reproduced for ALL.
If anyone is interested in assisting me with this venture send
articles, information, tools, etc to me at steven@cyberlizard.co.uk.
I would like all documents wherever possible to be in WORD format, for
PC or Apple, or RTF if you must. Tables must be in excel format or
CSV.
The site will be compiled and all documents will be available in Adobe
Acrobat format.
I have not yet registered to web domain as yet but expect either
http://www.osn.co.uk or http://www.opensourcenursing.co.uk
(preferences wanted).
Email me if you want more info.

oh yes
Steve this is a stellar idea, you need a little more background
in licenses and software formats, etc.

umm, M$ Word is proprietary

so is this. wasn't Adobe the company that had Dmitri Skylarov
arrested?

Steve there's other ppl doing true free documentation.
My brain refuses to come up with URLs though, but you might search
on /. or open an account there and ask for suggestions.
Pls be aware that you will get a lot of 1. doctrinaire and 2. good
advice against proprietary format software as well as the
documentation therein.

It's not a "catch" it's a license. the GPL:
http://www.gnu.org GPL GNU Public License.
Free as in Speech, Not as in Beer.
Learn about the difference.
Hint: you can _sell_ GPL'd docs/code also. (The buyer is
legally able to sell copies.)

Hi,
if you call it "Open Access", as Rod suggests, you'll end all the
side-squabbles about formats.
Plenty of sites already do this, though I know of none specifically for
nurses (that certainly doesn't mean there aren't any!!)
Take a look at, for example, http://www.goarticles.com/; I have used a
couple of such articles on my pages at http://www.realnurse.net/articles/ -
and, in a non-technological way, I'm already doing whst you seem to be
suggesting (as are many others):
1. Articles displayed for free access,
with
2. absolute license to copy, distribute or republish.
you also suggest
3. PDF and Word versions for download.
I'd add to that
4. "authors may include a 'footer' with reference, email and URL info, which
must be included in any subsequent copies, with this note added also as a
precondition' "
A website devoted to this would be a Good Thing, and I wish you well!

Sounds like an interesting idea.

Why use the proprietary Word format? Why not the OpenOffice.org XML file
format, which has been contributed to the OASIS standards group:

That's reasonable; although PDF is proprietary, the PDF standards are
open and documented, unlike Microsoft's Word file format.
