Hey,

Thanks to all those who posted to my last topic about fun things to do
on acid. We ended up just going to the beach and have a rollicking good
time. Well, 'good' isn't really the right word... we an intensely
enjoyable time, even if it did get a bit dark at times ;)

So now my friend and I have moved on to Mushrooms... and we need some
help. We have picked some which we are fairly sure are the right ones
(from our university campus, no less) but we aren't quite sure. We've
doubled checked on Erowid and they look very similar, but we've never
done it before and don't really no anyone who has. Basically we don't
want to get poisoned and all XXXXed up.

We've got 2 different varieties; one which looks like 'Copelandia
cyanescens' and another that looks like 'Psilocybe cubensis'. They both
look like the photos (particularly the cubensis) but are slightly
different. We realise that its probable they are the right ones and
photos always change colors etc a little and all plants are unique, but
we would like to be certain. Are we right for being so cautious? Or are
we being too worried?

If anyone (particularly from NZ or Australia, but any help would be
appreciated) could help us with some definite characteristics for
telling the right shrooms from the wrong, that would be
fan-XXXXing-tastic.

Cheers,

Ben.

Hey man...... I'm a Kiwi living now in Amsterdam. I've been here 12 years
now but growing up in N.Z I was part of a group of trippers that basically
discovered that N.Z is full of Psilocybin mushrooms. For quite a few years
the only places psilo's were known to grow were in Taranaki around New
Plymouth and in the south island in the high mountains. Suddenly in the
early 80's we started to find them everywhere.
The 2 main varieties in N.Z are in the North: 'Psilocybe Aucklandii' - a
wood-chip variety that grow in or around decaying pine plantations in the
Northern half of the North Island (that I believe are actually a kind of
psilocybe azurescens due to their incredible strength) and in the south:
psilocybe semilanceata (liberty Cap) - a dung dwelling psilo also the main
variety found in Europe and especially the U.K. Many more varieties can also
be found in N.Z especially variations of the psilocybe Aucklandii in the
North Island.
In recent years we have discovered that these mushrooms can be found in
huge numbers in, under and around kiwifruit plantations in Autumn. Take a
visit to the Bay of Plenty region around May/June and you will find mushroom
pickers up and down roadsides harvesting rubbish bags full of them. This
variety has obviously been introduced with the horticulture industry.
Here is a link to the best book there is about psilocybe mushrooms. In it
you will find excellent photos, descriptions and whereabouts of hundreds of
kinds of psilocybin, including several from N.Z.

Otherwise a basic rule as I'm sure you've been told is to bruise your
mushroom and if it turns a bluish colour within a few minutes/hours then
they're good to take. There are no variety of poisonous mushrooms growing in
N.Z that turn blue when bruised. All the psilocybe varieties that are found
in N.Z do turn blue :-)

good luck
regards Tim
