Hi everyone Well I am having a hug problem with people coming to my
site who are coming from another site I posted at for a short time.
That site is escrew.com and alot of those people are rascist people who
don't care who agrees with what they say. Well one of them came over to
my board and started right away flaming my members. I banned him right
then and there. well off and on, other people from that site are coming
over and purposefully starting trouble without being invoked. Now
according to this thread it looks like more trouble is on the way. That
link is from their site talking about mine. Befors I read that thread,
I had banned at least 5 differant people who came over and started the
same thing. What can I do other than banning them? Nothing? Our board

I've had "invasions" before. just require email notification,
temporarily ban hotmail/yahoo emails (be sure to keep from banning
current, the option below) every troll post delete/move to private
recycle bin. don't address it.. they want the attention from it.. be

turned off new registrations yesterday after deleting over 50 posts,

Ok several months ago, I had posted on a forum many of you may know
about but not want to ever join, that board is escrew. As many of you
may know, that board seems to be filled with 12-16 year old punks who
sneek in to use Daddys computer while he is at work. I had not posted
on that site more than 10 times after people on that site began
personally attacking my sister and I. Well I went there to read
something someone had referenced in a post on my forums and well to my
surprise, there is my member name set up exactly the way I left it,
posting these rediculous posts there. I have no doubt who the person is
who is logging onto my old account there, the same person who other
board members there has said is logging into at least 5 other peoples
accounts. There are no moderators on that board other than the owner
who posts there and does not deny the fact that he is using other
members accounts. This is the same board whos members have "who can get
banned first" on this or that message board. I have had more than my
share of these losers on my forums. Any thoughts on what I have said
especially about the owner using my member name and others? Odil

Okay, but what constitutes "for children"?
Well, not porn, not adult discussions a la Salon... Really, it's not
that hard to figure out. Hardly any vB's I've seen have been directed
at children. "To determine whether a Web site is directed to children,
the FTC considers several factors, including the subject matter; visual
or audio content; the age of models on the site; language; whether
advertising on the Web site is directed to children; information
regarding the age of the actual or intended audience; and whether a
site uses animated characters or other child-oriented features." Here's
the link. COPPA is only relevant when you are actively collecting
information from children, i.e. a poll or contest on the Lego site.
You don't have to have it enabled, but it doesn't hurt. Unless you're
specifically dedicated to kids fishing, it's not required. You can have
whatever nudity you want, as long as you're not aiming it at kids.
Be aware that COPPA is only a protective measure. The only time it will
become relevant is if a youngster falls into trouble on your site. It's
when the child's parents sue, that's when COPPA will be present to
either protect you, or prosecute you. If you keep all other
precautions, you should be safe.

If you run a forum with some mature content (IE swearing) and you

solicting information from children, you don't need COPPA. Don't let

In a perfect world, people are supposed to police themselves, and so
they are bound to respect one another. But, this is not a perfect
world, and there are a lot of boards out there where you get kids who
post all over the place like they own it, and do not care what people
think. That is where admins and mods step in--to keep the place from
destroying itself. Most boards that folded up are the ones who have
little moderation in place, and everyone just basically stepped on each
other. Ironically, I would think this board is moderated, so like a
post here said, we wonder why you're even here in the first place.
There is a difference between moderation and censorship. Moderation is,
in relation to BB's, closing a thread because it becomes a huge flame,
or moving a thread because its in the wrong forum. Censorship, however,
is bleeping out words. I believe in moderation mainly because I don't
want my members hating each other, however, they can cuss all they want

Moderation is only neccesary to remove posts that are racist posts,
mock events such as that of september 11th, and keep swearing to a
general low. A little cursing here and there isn't going to ruin
someones virgin ears. In my opinion moderators are needed.
It all depends on what your board is about. If it's a free-for-all
place where anything goes, then yeah moderation might interfere.
However, if you're trying to build a friendly community moderation is
an absolute must.
To have a professional, well-visited forum you need moderation. For
most of us, we aim to make our forums among the best in the industry -
to be known by many people across whatever industry we focus on. A
forum without moderation doesn't have a hope of achieving that.

moderators. They cause problems...but then again, just don't go there.
Places with NO moderators at all are often not a fun place to be,
though. What really irritates me about moderators and a community is
every action is scrutanized. People don't understand that just because
they don't think someone shouldn't be banned for warez doesn't mean
that that will actually happen. Things like that REALLY get on my
nerves.

The problem with your post wasn't our so-called lack of sense of
humour. I think it is unacceptable for two reasons (and this is the
first time I've seen it - just taken a look now). First it is
parodising the extremely popular vB Board of the Month contest - not a
great idea in the same forum which that contest takes place in.
Secondly, I think I can speak for most of the members here when I can
say we simply do not want to know about what you posted - it's not a
topic that crosses my mind very often, and I'm sure that's the case for
most other members. If you've got a problem with our actions here as
moderators, then put up with them. Nothing about the way this forum is
moderated is going to change, and I'm sure most people will agree that
it is fairly well-moderated at the moment.
Don't you think there should be a contest called: "The SICKEST vB Board
of the Month contest"??? or "The WEIRDEST vB Board of the Month

wonder you don't believe in moderators. Some forums want to maintain

I generally let ppl post whatever they want on my board, as long as its
not racist, pron or illegal stuff (warez etc). I run the board just for
fun, and its great just acting goofy and talking about weird things. I
really dont need any mods, because we rarely get flamewars, and I
hardly have enough ppl on my board to warrant more than 1 mod. I just
add mods for the hell of it I or the mods usually close a thread if it
remotely heads into a flamewar. But since the forum has been up since
July of last year, I've yet to ban anyone. I just want my forum to be
laid back, and ppl can talk about whatever. If they really want a
serious political discussion there are a million other forums for
politics and debates etc. But thats just me.

They dont take sides, again assumption on your part is wrong. They will
delete threads that are insulting, harassing, sexually explicit or
promote illegal acts (warez). ITS still a community and there is no
REASON To delete this thread (it does pertain to how forums are run;

You can use Sam Spade to trace the IP address and find out who to
contact. However I would just contact the Police and give them all the
information you have.

I have some knowledge in this. Child pornography is a very serious
offence, but the FBI reporting system online takes too long to process
(there is a lot of 'questionable' material out there where you cannot
tell the age of the person). Many companies intentionally get eighteen
year olds that look fourteen or fifteen for profits (even though there
are now strict laws about this). Contact your local FBI branch and
simply report it. By reporting it, you've done your part and get the
child porn off your website immediatly (but get proof of it). By
hosting child porn (even if you don't even know you have it) you are in
violation of the law. Make sure you're dealing with child porn before
giving the FBI (and INTERPOL, maybe) more work. Family pictures,
artistic pictures, etc, are not considered child porn. Unless the
material is explicit (genitilia exposed in a provacative way, etc) then
it's technically not child porn.

least. As for HR, they offer more than any host I've seen so far, but
thats just about the only reason I've stuck with em. We've been getting
poor (or outage) performance recently, and its becoming a real
annoyance. Shopping around now for another host that can offer what HR

It's your responsibility to read the TOS, if you don't agree to it, you
don't sign up. You can just say you were too lazy, you have to "Agree
to the TOS to continue". The TOS will say that they reserve the right
to suspended or shut down any site that contains warez or adult
material because let's face it, all hosts do that. So, the contract
gives them the right to do what they did. You think they would
knowingly go against a contract? Hosts like these shut down sites
hosting content like that left and right. It's nothing new to them.
You're going to end up losing more money if you go off on some shooting

And they can fight the charge by providing proof of what you've done,
the violations, and their TOS.
But if the credit card company refuses to honor your chargeback you'll
be stuck with it. If you don't pay it it'll get sent to a credit
agency, where interest/penalties will accrue, and your credit will be
damaged. But beyond the credit issue, I think you should just swallow
this bitter pill. It was your fault for not abiding by the TOS you
agreed to. Perhaps they should credit you for the remaining unused
credit, but you don't have a right to a full refund. To try getting
that via a chargeback would show a bad faith effort on your part.

the idea has potential. i'm thinking it would work best on a forum that
covers a broad subject area and then people who want to focus on a
specific subject area within yours could buy a single forum on your
forums.
I think its a good idea to be honest... however you should capture a
specific market and not try and encompass everything. My forums offer
free vB sub forums to clans and projects in the gaming scene,
specifically Unreal Tournament and a certain way its played. We don't
charge, but I'm sure if we did people would want a little more for
their money. IMO you would need to develop: - A community control panel
to let forum leaders moderators modify their own styles - Certain admin
options which are currently global to be made specific to a certain
sub-forum or usergroup - A slightly different visual approach to the
co-branding so that you wouldn't list 100's of forums on the main page.
Now that's a good idea, try it free, then if it's successful it would
be easier to charge later on.
