Hi there, Mr Random,
In my experience DMT/ayahuasca has been very insightful and profound,
I have been comparing it to getting connected to a kind of 'alternate
reality internet' and finding that I got more insight in the working
of my brains and my consciousness, and helped me with increasing self-
confidence, made me less prone to getting depressed, and I've learned
things from those experience concerning making music and singing, and
it gave me more insights into the practice of shamanism/curanderism.

I do practice making shamanic music, wouldn't call myself a full fledged
shaman, but I have been studying, experiencing and learning in that
direction. For one thing it has given me opportunities to work on
levels of alternate realities that for most people stay unexplored
areas and modes of consciousness. It has given more understanding
about the processes involved in consciousness and the interaction
of my own consciousness in relation to other people and beings, reality,
the ego etc. It also showed me both dark and light aspects of myself,
of life, of the world, and filled me with awe about the deep mystery
behind our very existence. Given a good set and setting, preferably
a ceremony led by an experienced traditional ayahuascero or with
the Santo Daime church or the Uniao de Vegetal, the combination of
plant based Beta-carbolines (mainly harmine, harmaline and
tetrahydroharmine) of the caapi vine and the n,n-DMT from one
of the traditional admixture plants (chacruna and chagropanga)
is very worthwhile, cleansing and healing on multiple levels.
Careless use in less than optimal set and setting can be
highly unsettling, this should be handled with the highest
respect and preparations as careful and rigorous as if you
would go mountain climbing or parachute jumping.
While safe in most cases, there are some contra-indications.
Psychosis and having a history of psychosis or schizophrenia
are reasons to avoid ayahuasca/DMT. Combination with
anti-depressive medications, stimulants and other psycho-active
medication can be very unpredictable, potentially dangerous
and even fatal though serotonin syndrome.
For example up to six weeks after taking Prozac it can be
fatally dangerous to drink ayahuasca, not because of the DMT,
but because of the MAO-A inhibition by the harmine/harmaline
and the mild long-lasting SSRI action of tetrahydroharmine.
For people who are prone to depression but not taking
pharmaceutical medication for it, ayahuasca can be both
an acute cure as well as a preventive medicine for depression,
even without the DMT containg admixture plants, and it can
also be a medicine for sleep disorders and anxieties as well
as AD(H)D and Alzheimers.
Practicing a healthy diet well before participating
in ayahuasca ceremonies is a good idea, as is practicing
some form(s) of meditation, yoga and/or tai ch'i.
