Need All Your Wisdom!!!
|
|
|
| Hi All!
OK, I am limping to the point the I have to hold on to things as I walk,
I know I need to use a cane but I am having a hard time coming to
terms with that!! I am 32 and have 2 kids (one 9 and one 12). I worry
about how their classmate will react to having their Mom using a cane.
I know that sounds stupid but kids are mean. And as we all know people
just can't help but stare when someone needs help walking.
Gosh I sound petty and stupid but does anyone have any advice for me?
I know I need the help while walking to keep from an even more
embarrassing situation like falling but I am just needing that encourage-
ment I guess!!!
Thanks so much for your advice!!!
Smiles!

|
| I guess what I was trying to say but didn't was that I just
need some advice to get over my worries about using a
cane...there, that sounds better!!!

Get a cane with character. I started out with one of those drugstore types, but
decorated it according to the season, shamrocks, etc. Had happy faces on it too.
As soon as I could I got them that were custom made. Then told people I was
making a fashion statement. As you said, much better than falling. Then your
children's friends would be able to look at your cast.

| I agree..one with a bit of spunk.
When I had my walker I was working at a place with lots of children. I
attached streamers to it and put on funky coloured tape in weird designs. I
had one kid give me a horn from thei bike. It was funny and very therapeutic

hi kami,
i think joan's advice was excellent -- make a personal fashion
statement with your cane. :->
when i first started using a cane to walk, because i lived in a pretty
crummy neighborhood, my biggest worry was that people would look at me
and see 'easy prey.' dennis made my first cane -- actually a 'walking
stick' -- out of an old chrismas tree trunk, and then fitted the top
with a big bronze demon-head, LOL!! evil, grinning gargoyle looking
thing. I LOVED it! ;->
maybe not appropriate for attending your kids' school functions though.
=:o have some fun, decorate that sucker, throw your personality into
it and let it shine.
when tam was young, we lived in the ghetto, and kids were ALWAYS making
fun of other kids' mamas, most likely just goading them into a fight,
but interestingly, she NEVER had that problem. occasionally another kid
would ask why her mama used a cane, and she'd glare and say 'because
she has M.S.!!' i don't think the kids really understood what M.S. was,
but they also never ragged on her about it.
truthfully, it was a lot more embarrassing BEFORE I became obviously
disabled, when i had the reeling staggery walk -- people tended to
assume i was staggering around drunk. :{
kids who want to make fun of their classmates WILL find a reason,
whether it's parental disability, your mom's old beater car, you're too
fat/too skinny/ wear glasses/have an accent/are too dumb/are too
smart/too ugly/too pretty/don't have your own cell phone in 3rd
grade... it's (unfortunately) something that lots of kids have to deal
with, and learn to ignore, or to respond to on their own, with help
from us older, wiser parental figures. ;->
talk about it with your kids. if they understand why you're using the
cane, they can explain simply why you use it, if anyone should ask. and
if they explain and then other kids dis them, have a talk with them
about how some people are just snotty and ignorant, and really, who
cares what snotty, ignorant people think?
as you said yourself, it would be more embarrassing, painful, and
complicated for you to fall down and hurt yourself in front of your
kids' classmates, than it would be to walk in with a keen-looking cane!
best,
rose

I also used to tell people it had other uses.
1. If someone bugged me I could always stick it between their feet to trip them
up.
2. And this is the one I used most: If I see a good looking man I can just hook
it around his neck and haul him in. :-)

| Great advice and suggestions!!! I will just get a really cool
walking stick or cane and deal with the other stuff when/if
it happens. And I will have a good talk with the girls, I know
it won't bother them, but let them know that what other
kids/people think doesn't mean anything.
Thank You! Thank Yoy! Thank You!
Big Smiles!

| took me ages to feel comfortable with my walking stick, but now I would feel
weird without it. I also have a wheelchair for when needed and what I call
my wheelie walker, it has a seat for sitting on if you get tired with
walking, pretty snazzy really. but I feel slightly uncomfortable with that
as yet. still getting used to it and yet it is far more helpful than the
walking stick.

Hi Kami
A cane is better than falling, but you know all the logistics right?
you worry about the embarrassment ?
Kami, the kids wont mind. Kids are pretty cool really, especially
this age group. If you get their friends used to it, now, it will
never be an issue.
dh rather likes his stick... it helps capture a 2.5 yo running away.

The dumbest thing I ever did was not go into a wheelchair when I needed it.
So I stayed at home. Then I refused a cain, because it made Stefanie cry.
Two of the dumbest things I ever did.
Buy a sharp looking thin black cain. One that looks respectable and sharp.
Tie a nice, small, bow around it or something if you want to brighten it up.
Why not? But do get one, and do use it. You plant it on the ground in
rythm with the poor leg your making up for. Become adept at twirling it
through your fingers and all that. (My mother was a baton twirling coach of
all things. Dont laugh, many of her students college was payed for due to
that.) Have fun with it.
In regard to kids and barbs from peers... teach your kids to fight. Groin
kicking, eye poking... just kidding. Just tell your kids why you limp, why
having a cain makes walking easier, and have them explain that to any
smart-XXX who want to tease. If they are still teased, then its time to
fight. ;^)
Really, dont worry about it. That type of teasing is a not so subtle form
of an IQ test. Dont waste your time worrying about the opinions of children
with IQ 70 or below. Theyre simply not bright enough to understand. And
most likely, neither are their parents. Saddly.

| Hi Kami,
Walking with a cane is nothing to be ashamed of. It is a tool to help
get you from one place to another like riding a bicycle and driving a
car is.
I remember when I first started walking with a cane umpteen years ago.
<smiling> I was so ashamed - I never wanted to leave the house.
With time you get used to it and you learn to accept it like anything
else. <smiling>
One important thing about using a cane. When walking with a cane you
carry the cane in the opposite hand of your weak leg. That is, if you
use the cane with your right hand - you start off with your left foot
and vice versa. It might take some getting used to but eventually it
becomes a piece of cake.
I hope this helped. <smiling>
Take care,

| Again I want to Thank You all for your help. I have started using my
cane around the house, the girls questioned me at first but as soon as
I told them that it helped me walk (and walk a bit fast, which it does)
they were very supportive. Now for the rest of the world, but who
cares what they think!!!!!!!

grins. It is a great place to buy canes and walking sticks. Remember,
there is a big difference between a walking cane and a support cane so
beware.
How about a nice sword cane for the rude-nics that stare too long?
